Daniel and I actually both got engagements rings, chosen together, very soon after our engagement, freaking out his parents. (I think we knew but it didn't register that only the fiancee should traditionally wear an engagement ring... and we decided that, as Daniel is as proud and as much a part of the relationship as I am, he deserved to share it with the world as much as I do.) Mine was first and we went back to the store (a little miscellaneous import shop) a few days later to get his.

Engagement rings don't need to be diamonds. I think my ring was $12 and his was $22 or something, sterling silver. Our rings are simply ways of wearing each other on our bodies and letting the world know about our relationship. They have moonstone inlays, chosen because the stone has deep meaning to me (of a pagan background).

I think the rings should definitely not be pursued due to the "should" connotations of tradition so much as personal meaning - and in that lieu, in the event of tradtition being meaningful to you, you should get rings. We really like our rings, and instead of wedding ones, I'm inclined for us to get malas (prayer beads) instead - again of our joint choice, because I find meaning in them and in their significance to our union, and Daniel generally finds meaning in my finding meaning. So we've taken tradition and made it fun, and unique to us.

Ultimately I think it should be fun. Isn't that why we're all getting married? Having your meaningful diamond engagement ring stolen probably does not qualify as fun. But ultimately it's up to you to define what's meaningful and fun.

I hope this was of some use to you :)

My fiance mailed me mine , and on the phone, he ' placed ' it on my finger.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I tried to edit my post to actually include some potentially helpful information but it wouldn't go through:

If a traditional diamond engagement ring is meaningful and fun to your fiancee but it may get stolen in her country where she will spend her time as a fiancee, then I suggest you evaluate its usefulness: when she enters the US, where it is safer but not safe to wear a diamond ring, she will not be engaged for very long, yes? You'll be married and tradition is to get wedding rings. I believe then the fiancee switches her engagement ring to her right hand (but I have no actual knowledge of exactly how traditional wedding processes go, only intuition). Sooooo *hand weighing gestures*

Engagement ring is only used at western counties. In Brazil, for example, they don't have this "engagement ring" tradition. Plus if I give my fiancee a engagement ring and she lives in Rio, she might get her finger chop off by gang. So depending on where your fiancee live and what country she is from, I would suggest give her a "normal" gold ring or silver ring until she is here. Then give her a "diamond" anniversary ring if you wish.

I gave it to my fiance when I asked her to marry me. Actually I asked her first. When she finally let go of me (I thought she would hug me to death), I gave her the ring.

My fiance can only wear it on her day off from work, and then it's risky as it could get stolen from her. I gave her the option of me keeping it here in the US for security reasons, but she wouldn't let me do that. :D

I bought my fiance jewelry when we were in China. She wears them but hides the pendant under her shirt and takes the ring off and puts in her pocket when she commutes home or is outside the house or office. So, if your fiance is careful about it and its traditional to you both - then go for it.

I like to surprise my fiance, so when I came to visit last March, we had planned on looking at engagement rings. But I acted uninterested in jewelry stores on our trip to the mall. We did get her ring fnger measured, however- 5 1/2. Later that night, back at the hotel, we were sitting talking. I picked up her right hand and slipped the engagement ring on her finger, and then I asked her to marry me. She had no idea I had brought the ring with me from the states. Funny thing . . . the ring I picked out, the one I liked best out of all the ones I looked at, they had only one . . . size 5 1/2. Oh, and she said 'yes'. We began filling out the k-1 forms the week I returned home.

Second question . . . this is a valid concern in some countries. Evelyn is filipina, and I considered that it might not be a good idea for her to walk around with a big diamond. But I wanted her to have one, so I decided on a modest ring - big enough for her to know how much I love her, small enough to keep her safe.

October 1, 2005 . . . . Evelyn and I met online

March 8, 2006 . . . . Traveled to Phils for first face-2-face . . . Oh, my god! . . . Wow!!!

March 21, 2006 . . . . I-129F Packet Sent

March 30, 2006 . . . . NOA1 Received

May 25, 2006 . . . . Traveled to Phils for Evelyn's June 1st Bday

July 13, 2006 . . . . IMBRA-RFE Information Received Ack from USCIS

September 11, 2006 . . . . Email from USCIS - CASE APPROVED !!!!!!

I think you should first understand the traditions of her country. My wife is from Ukraine and she felt uncomfortable about an engagement ring so we didn't get one. The ring she is most happy to wear is the wedding ring. She didn't think it was practical to buy another ring when she would be getting one that was to signify our marriage. I think you'll find that eastern European women are very practical when it comes to money. If you give her a choice between you making another visit or getting her a ring, I'm pretty sure you would be getting on a plane soon.

Also, you might find that traditions vary quite a lot from here in America. In Ukraine the married women wear their rings on the right hand. My wife chose to use her left hand here, because she is in America.

It's not a matter of being cheap or anything like that, its about understanding and respecting cultural differences. You are planning to blend her culture with your own, so there will be a little give and take on many aspects.

Ask her what she feels best about. I think you'll be saving some money for other things.

I got my engagement ring after we decided that we wanted to spend our life together. He surprised me with it, though. I was visiting him in Spain, and we went all over Madrid, seeing the sights with his brother. Every time we saw a jewelry store, we went into look because his brother said that he wanted to buy a ring for his girlfriend. I was getting annoyed, because *how many* jewelry stores did we have to keep looking at, lol. Then my now husband showed me some rings, and asked my opinion about different ones. Later that night, when we were alone, he presented me with a silver ring that said "love forever", or "forever love", depending on how you read it. I loved the ring soooo much!

Alas, I lost the ring at the Starbucks in Madrid later that summer. For some reason, the embassy wanted to interview me too (I'm the USC), and the embassy wouldn't let us in before the appointment. And when I get nervous, I have to use the restroom. So we went to the Starbucks to kill time, and I left my ring in the bathroom...didn't notice it until it was too late. We never replaced the ring, because it wouldn't be as special.

As for our wedding rings, we picked them out after he came here, and didn't show anybody until the wedding day. I don't really like diamonds, never have. As a teenager, I always joked I wanted a wedding ring made out of strings or beads. But we both ending up getting blue topaz rings. They are so beautiful! And they fit us. I'm not ver traditional, lol.
