Can anyone say cost overruns ?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110422/ap_on_re_us/us_treasure_island

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco city planners have approved a $1.5 billion neighborhood to be built on Treasure Island, located in San Francisco Bay between the city and Oakland.

The plan includes 8,000 residential units and a 450-foot high-rise on the island.

Critics say the man-made island would not fare well in an earthquake and that the project would increase traffic on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Supporters say developing the 400 acres in the middle of San Francisco Bay is a unique opportunity.

San Francisco's Planning Commission voted 4-3 on Thursday. It will next be considered by the Board of Supervisors.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

sounds like the rich want to get away from the dregs of society.

That's about it to. Kick backs, cost over runs, and who's who is what this is all about. The tax payers are going to eat it on this one...but seeing how it's Californians paying those taxes, I hope they get hosed in the worst way possible.

I've been there late at night when friends wanted to fish (catch and release). For those that don't know, it was a navy station but is half abandoned. There are some apartments on the island already. I don't know about it being a wealthy get away....I imagine many of the units would rent for say 2,000 for a 1 bedroom which isn't that bad.

The bridge though....yeah what a nightmare. You have to wait at a stop sign and then you have maybe 25 ft to merge. Also liquefaction is a serious issue.

For the City, it's win-win. They will make a ton of money off the deal. The commuters, however, are already complaining. Like has been said above, the entrance to the place is off the middle of the bridge between San Francisco and Oakland, which would only make a miserable commute unbearable. The new bridge when it is finished, will already be too small to handle the current commuter load.

There would need to be a ferry at least.
