Amazing dome houses in the California desert that can withstand an earthquake, stay cool without air conditioning and cost less than a used car.

In Hesperia, California, architect Nader Khalili created a housing movement for the future. Khalili, who passed away in 2008, prototyped his dome-shaped adobes on a commission from NASA for a lunar colony. Then he realized that his "superadobes" could take root on Earth. Studio 360's Eric Molinsky visited Cal-Earth with some friends who dream of living in giant igloos made of dirt. (Originally aired: April 18, 2008)

Tattooine coming to a California desert near you.

Recently on a drive in Indiana I saw a home built inside an earthen mound. I thought that would have to be nice and cool in the summer and nice and warm in the winter. It was fairly close to where that huge wind farm is located. Goes to show you that in Indiana there is more than just corn.

I absolutely adore these! My fiance and I have been looking at a bunch of domes and the misc designs, mostly out of curiousity though.

Cool, but I doubt the "no air conditioning" part in the heat of the deserts of Arizona or anywhere where the temps are in the upper 90's/100's. Especially in high humidity areas.

My father was born in Arizona in 1927, back when they had no AC. The Native Americans thrived in the desert for centuries before that. Sitting in a sweat lodge would probably help you with your anger problems.

I'm amused by liberal hacks like you and Zero saying "so angry" on things.

I'm not angry at all. I'm laughing at your posts more and more every day actually. It works out better that way.

I point out the thievery you all support in stealing money off the backs of hard working people to subsidise your ####### all in the name of global warming. How taxing people will help your statist cohorts reign supreme.

No seriously, I'm not angry. I feel sorry for you if anything.

I know you'd like it to be 1927. However this is 2011, and not the days when people want to live in that extreme heat like that without relief. You all want us back riding horses, not touching mother earth, etc. I get it...

Your words just drive themselves like knives into the deepest parts of my 'liberal hack' soul. Being you the only one here to politicize things beyond any reasonable repair- I'll let your own silliness continue to entertain the rest of us. They do say certain things about paranoia- you might want to check out that Robbins and Post book on Political Paranoia.

But being so well-versed in everything, you may have also considered that earthen layers, such as the ones advertised here, or even more naturally- caves, provide relief and shelter from extreme heat. Of course you knew that, even in your pang of anger.

Name a widely used energy source out there that doesn't rely on subsidies.

For some its perfectly OK that GE didn't pay any Federal Taxes because they're part of the 'free' market.

Either that - or he'll go postal and start shooting Congressmen and -women.

Sure why not? Its not like he wrote the tax code just for them.

Maybe talk to those that obstruct any meaningful tax reform in... oh... Congress.
