I got this book called immigration it is dated in 1997 and it said something about the person you are filing for whom I am filing for my husband in jamaica that they have to take a test and they have to get tested on their reading and writing is this true????

I never heard such a thing. For IR1/CR1 filers the beneficiary has to take a medical and go to the interview at the U.S Embassy. Maybe what youre referring to is for employement based green cards.

They are probably refering to the citizenship test, much later on. There is an English test in that where you have to writer a sentence, and a civics test.

Immigration law has changed dramatically since 1997. When that book was written there was no Department of Homeland Security nor USCIS. Do not use that book as a reference for anything.

Wait I am confused so there is a test involved such as english and a writing test and united state test??? which one is it?? this is not some employment greencard this is getting a relative over here aka my husband

English language skills are tested when a legal permanent resident is applying for a US citizenship - this is not what you are doing. You are applying for a marriage based green card, and there is no language test related to this process.

There is no such test if you are filing for CR1 or K1, but you do have to take a little English test when you apply for citizenship.

I would not recommend you looking at any laws in a book from 97 after 9/11 the immigration laws and process has changed a lot.

Sorry I just saw the message you sent me to my inbox.. i also responded to the questions that you asked me. Naah your husband will not be required to take a test of any kind.. for English... do u think that HALF of these people here would get their husbands and wives who are barely even able to type up or worst yet respond to a question.. posted on here... No!

Your husband is from country that speaks English... that's not a hard thing to brush up on if it was a requirement..!

I didn't understand her issue either, since English is the native language for Jamaica. Maybe she needs to tell him to stop speaking Jamaican patois and speak to her using the English language.

No test until you apply for citizenship. And even then it certainly is not a test of your ability to read and write, more an ability to memorize how to write and read a few simple sentences which are given to you in advance.

The only thing to memorize are the answers.. not how to read and write.. where was your naturalization test..?

There is a test when you apply for US citizenship - NOT when you apply for a green card. Applicants for naturalization (US citizenship) must demonstrate a proficiency in the English language, and a basic knowledge of US civics. Someone applying for a green card based on a spousal relationship with a US citizen needs to demonstrate only that the relationship is genuine, and not for the purpose of circumventing immigration law. Green card applicants can, and often do, have translators present for their interview.

USCIS releases a study guide of all vocab from the test, memorize those words and you can do the test.

Speaking English and being able to pass an English test are two differnt things. Regardless, for marriage based visas there is not an English test so no need to worry.
