It is nice to talk hypothetical and it actually got me thinking that I probably should have insured it and sent requiring a signature. There is some protection for the seller too and I am pretty sure they can't just say they received an empty box and get the product + full payment returned.

However, without a delivery confirmation they will award the buyer their money back in every case. After looking at some of the forums it looks like there are professional eBay thieves that look for inexperienced sellers that don't provide a tracking number / delivery confirmation.....They know that all they have to do is say they didn't get their item and they get a full refund no questions asked.

On a good note my buyer has thousands of feedback, over 99% of it is positive, and she has purchased at least 10 of these iPads in the last few weeks for around $1,000 each....So the chances of her making a claim against me are even less likely considering there are a good 10 other sellers that sold iPad 2s to her.

You'll be fine. Only sell to people who have lots of positive feedback and check to see that they have purchased other high price items.

Technically, if your parcel gets left on a doorstep, you cannot prove buyer rec'd it.

You are in for a world of hurt if your buyer isn't as pure as the driven snow.

And so are the other 15 people that sold this person with immaculate feedback and communication iPad 2s

You don't understand, do you?

This has nothing to do with the other transactions this person had.

You can wipe your azz with your delivery confirmation. Mostly everyone who buys anything on the internet knows that if you don't request signature...it is ok for the carrier to leave at the doorstep, AND without signature, the buyer can simply say 'it wasn't there' and you are fuqued. And w/o insurance? You take the hit.

This is aside from the normal risk you take with big ticket items. You have essentially bent over and lubed up.

Question is, what is the buyer gonna do.

Ya, and she could say she received a box full of rocks with signature.

Ya, and she could say her brother signed and when she got the box nothing was in it.

There are a million "well, this could happen" scenarios. I am protected under seller protection. If it were that easy to scam eBay then that would be a slight problem for the company. The answer is it is not that easy to scam your way into a refund for a high ticket item.

Let me ask you a simple question. This eBayer has over 5,000 transactions completed in the last couple years....Are you saying this is something she REGULARLY does? Is there a pattern of her claiming $500 or more products didn't arrive to her?

You are a negative person and can respond with all the "what if" scenarios you like but it still doesn't mean anything. I know a lot of negative people like you. I try to avoid them at all "costs". good.gif

It's not being negative, it's being smart.

You call people isheep presumably because you think they're stupid for buying something, yet you sell $1000 item and don't protect yourself.

You are not protected under seller policy without paying for signature confirmation. And you are not protected from your shipper by paying for insurance.

Furthermore, how on earth could I comment on what your buyer REGULARLY does? I said you have left yourself a major hole if your buyer is not as pure as the driven snow, and doesn't take this optty to screw you. I don't even know your buyer, what a ridiculous q.

And since you think I'm being 'negative' here's a 3 second search on paypal:

For payments over $250 USD (or local currency equivalent, including shipping and tax), be sure that you have signature confirmation of delivery in addition to proof of shipment (See above). If a buyer files a claim, you must respond to our requests for information as outlined in our communications to you.

Important Shipping Information

Depending on the type of claim or chargeback the buyer files, you will need to provide either Proof of Shipment or Proof of Delivery to get coverage.

If you're responding to an "item not received" claim, you'll need to provide Proof of Delivery from a shipping company that meets the following conditions:

  • It shows the status as delivered.
  • It confirms the date the order was delivered.
  • It includes the recipient's address, including a minimum of the city, state, and zip code (or equivalent).
  • For payments of $250 USD (or local currency equivalent) or more, it includes proof of the recipient's signature to confirm delivery.

(red emphasis mine)

here's another:

https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=security/seller_protection_faq

What should I do if a buyer files a claim or a chargeback for an item not received?

PayPal will place a temporary hold on the funds in question and send you an email requesting proof of delivery.

For payments of less than $250 USD (or its equivalent in another currency), you will need to provide proof of delivery that can be viewed online. For payments of $250 USD or more, you will need to provide a signature confirmation that can be viewed online.

Once we've received your proof of delivery, we will determine whether or not your transaction is eligible for coverage. If it is, we'll lift the temporary hold and restore your access to the funds as soon as possible. If it isn't, we'll return the funds to the buyer's account and you will be responsible for PayPal's chargeback fee, if applicable.

Read the PayPal User Agreement for our complete terms of coverage.

Here's a 10 second search on ebay's discussion boards:

http://forums.ebay.c...=2001&search=GO

This particular link shows 100 pages of threads saying exactly what I'm saying to you.

If it's left on the porch, and your buyer claims non receipt, you will lose.

Be smarter on your future listings and spend the extra $5.

I don't think he quite grasps the difference between flipping a few items that are en vogue at the moment and running an online merchant.

It's obvious I don't agree that it's amazing to shell out almost $900 for an 11% profit, but if anyone's gonna do it, (s)he should protect him/herself in every way possible.

eBay and paypal throw sellers under the bus all the time, and will continue to do so. Going to your bank acct and seeing $1000 shortfall is not something I would wish on anyone. Even those who use Comic Sans in their listing descriptions. ;)

You are right. But writing 2 pages telling me how I am so screwed if the buyer wants to claim she never got the iPad is a little much. I get the point. It is my first time selling a high ticket item (besides an iPhone 4 for $500) and I was unfamiliar with how to protect myself. I screwed up and could very well pay $1,000 for my error. I only have a couple things going for me. 1) is that this particular buyer has 5,000 feedback and I don't see any such incidents on her file. 2) is that she has bought over 10 of these iPads and looking at some of the sellers there are at least 2 that I see that look like they are on the same boat as me. There is nothing that can be done.

I don't think he quite grasps the difference between flipping a few items that are en vogue at the moment and running an online merchant.

You are VJs biggest troll. You're not very well liked on this forum so I'm not sure why you continue to post. Isn't it time for you to count the few coins you have in your pockets for dinner with your coworkers at Dunkin Donuts.

Awww, no need to get all butthurt. Seriously, you are taking a lot of unnecessary risks in selling these on ebay. You post them on a thread like this, bragging about it, then whine when people point out that there is a better way to do it. Maybe you should have studied business in university rather than spanish or doing coke.
