Hey now no need to bring the commodore 64 into this, she was a gem during her day.

Hehe secretly I just wanted an excuse to post a photo of the disk drive. I think I had just finished reading about an 8 bit computer kit when I posted that.

Sure, but what does that have to do with the price of beer? I am surmising that you are convinced that learning methods you don't approve of=welfare

I'm not saying I disapprove of it. I'm saying when you have a system in which the dumb kids are helped by the smart ones, they're encouraged to always seek help for problems they should be able to take care of on their own.

The best way to retain knowledge is to help others learn the material. I know this first hand.

It may be the best way for you but It's not the best way for everyone. Simply put, there is no one size fits all way to educate everyone since everyone retains knowledge differently.

This has nothing to do with entitlements... a more honest comparison would be a student who just bails on studying and hopes the teacher will push him along with a D because he did no work.

Like real life, sometimes when you try, you fail. The only difference in this exercise is the kids can't fail because the smart kids are made to help them. Those same smart kids end up helping the dummies not fail again later in life in the form of the entitlement programs.

Where'd they learn to take advantage of that?

How can it be an entitlement when everyone is working hard?

I can work all day long for minimum wage. Doesn't mean I'm going to be able to pay my bills. Should the government (or those smart enough to live within their means and/or make more than minimum wage) subsidize my existence because I can't handle it myself?

If the government is going to force me to exercise my "right" to health care, then they better start requiring people to exercise their Right to Bear Arms. - "Where's my public option rifle?"

Actually, asking for help is finding a solution to a problem. What you fail to understand is that the person offering help gains something too.

I think we are getting into a possible reason for why some in the 'personal responsibility' community don't do so well in getting things. When faced with a problem they could overcome by learning more- they choose to not learn at all because if they can't do it by themselves- nobody can help them.

What do we gain by paying people to watch cable and reproduce?

Yeah, that's it.

People sit at home doing nothing (except watching cable, smoking weed and reproducing) all day and the reason they can't make it is because they're not educated enough. You already said the smart kids helped them learn. How can that still be the problem. Were they educated or not?

None of the rest of us can understand how effective education works because we're not educated enough on the issue. I wonder, if we got more educated, would we then be able to stop "helping the dumb kids" or would the government (not just teachers now) require us to help them more?

Read again what you just wrote... it really makes no sense at all. What 'people' are you referring to?

Society's answer to all our problems. Move away from them.

It's an individual's answer. You go where you can maximize your potential.

Where I live, there are large numbers of unemployed people who hang out all day, don't have computers (although they have smart phones - that's a right) and generally attend "meetings" all day long. Only difference is instead of them making products to sell or providing services in exchange for taxable income, we're all paying them to simply exist. Not only exist... but multiply.

You should move :)

Actually, if someone asks for help, they receive it and then they learn I'm pretty sure that greatly reduces the need to pay people welfare down the line.

If they're taught to fish, sure. But, more often than not, they're handed a fish and learn, "all I gots to do is aks for another fish and they gonna give me one."

The 'people' who can't fish and rely on someone to hand them a fish.

Your potential for what? Needing more gas to get wherever you need to go?

You should move :)

Why?

No matter how far away you live from "those people" they still exist. Just because you can't see them in your neighborhood doesn't mean they're not there. Eventually, it's going to catch up to you because they reproduce faster than you can pay for them. They are a parasite and they're going to eat this country from the inside out.

That is not what is being described and you know it but would probably argue that the pope wasn't a methodist and that bears don't $hit in the woods.

My experience, is that teaching people how to do something and working together produces results. Everywhere I look where people do things and are successful they seem to be doing the same. I don't spend much time with people on welfare so YRMV

I do spend a lot of time with people on welfare and for the most part, they've never been taught to take it upon themselves to be responsible. They'll do the minimum because that's what's required.

Programs that require smart people to teach dumb ones do very little for the smart. Even less for the dumb.
