How would I go about finding employment if my meaningless piece of paper (degree) is not in IT, medicine, law, or engineering?

I totally get that. I absorb information so stuff like chemistry and physics (even though I hated both because I hated math) was easy until I got to the 400 level stuff. Then I had to figure out how to study because I'd never done it before. That sucked big time.

Now I love math. I get excited when I get things right.

What kind of math classes did you take? My brother did most of the calculus classes and some other theory classes and I'm pretty sure he doesn't remember a thing and could not do a problem correctly. Point is most people (unless you are a genius or a big nerd and study the stuff periodically so you retain it) will forget EVERYTHING in a matter of 8 months...So what is the point?

calculus 1 2 & 3, statistics, differential equations

I definitely don't remember everything from those classes but I can usually figure out problems if I stare at examples in a textbook for a few minutes. I get excited because I can still figure out how to do the problems. I'm sure I will forget most of it when I'm not using it anymore. I was a science major so I used math for a lot of things.

I asked a sincere question because I am concerned (have been for years due to the career path I have chosen) that I won't be able to find a decent career when I graduate. If it offends you because you are not college educated or your current career goal is to get off probation without violating and getting thrown in prison then feel free to comment elsewhere. No need to make pointless remarks here. Just looking for some advice. If you want I can start a "5 Steps to Getting Through Probation Without Violating the Judges Orders" thread and you can comment there.

LI: what did you do for a living prior to 2006?

At 22 years old...Student...Lived with parents....Worked a couple part-time jobs but mostly unemployed....Just scraped enough money together for fast food, a couple loose cigarettes (sold individually at most gas stations in Detroit) and prior to meeting my wife in March '06 my main goal was to scrape enough money together to get a teener (1/2 of an 8-ball of coke) which was $50....My friends and I sat around all day and didn't really do much but play video games and party

Undergrad dual degrees: Hispanic Studies and International Studies

Graduate degree: MA in Language and International Trade

I won't finish my program until December or possibly next April ('12) at the latest. The only thing I have going for me is 2 rental homes that is enough to pay the bills: 1 @ $825/month and 1 @ $1150/month

Should have a third by January 2012 (August if extremely lucky)...

My resume is kinda thin....I am actually considering a Comcast internship for $14/hour for 40 hours per week (need an internship for my degree and the only one my university provides is with the Mexican Consulate UNPAID)......

Am I screwed?

Udelhoven is hiring for the slope. I'm heading up there in another month. Starting pay for a shop hand up there is somewhere around $24 an hour starting. You would be working 7/12's for 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off.

Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

What does "for the slope" mean? I was actually trying to finish my master's program (5 classes remaining)....Can I be a scheduler? Oh, would they take my wife who is not completely fluent in English (2 paychecks are better than 1). Finally, is the 3 weeks off paid? I probably wouldn't pack my bags and head out to Alaska but you never know. Went to their website, here is what they show they are hiring for:

A lot of the jobs listed down below are in Anchorage, and not up on the slope. Anchorage...population 300,000..guesstimate. NP your wife not speaking English, most of the peeps living out in the Bush up here speak English as a second language. Schools are decent, metro services, two university's in Anchorage, BestBuy's, Walmart, Taco Bells, McDonalds, Penney's, Nordstrom, Costco's, etc... we have it up here. Check out the job links though down below. Our economy hasn't taken the hit as bad as the lower 48.

My wife came here 14 months ago from Belarus and she's bringing down $22.78 hr. as a dental assistant..that and they have offered to pay for her schooling if she goes for the dental hygienist program in Anchorage.

Here's some links to some decent outfits up here.

insurance adjuster

you're a young bilingual tech savy problem solver with a degree (they don't care in what, just that you graduated. they'll train you their way anyway). i'm not BSin you here, look into it. you're a good candidate for one of the major companies to take on as an intern. base pay isn't bad & performance = compensation in the insurance business.

Great post...I'm gonna note these links but it would be quite a leap for me to make to pack my bags, move away from everyone, and start a new life in Alaska....Your wife must be blown away at making nearly $23 an hour! Is she? Would they make anything near that in Belarus? That's more than my cousin who just started a job as a nurse...

It's a big step, but once you come up here your going to thank your stars you did. The money's good, the housing market is a buyer's market atm, and it's a great way to get a foot in the door. Most all of these outfits have offices nation wide so there's the chance of transferring to a warmer climate later on.

My wife was has a PhD in veterinary medicine and managed a clinic in Belarus, and she didn't make jack ####### for $$$. It would take her about 3 years to practice veterinary medicine here and she got this offer a month after she got off the plane here. So far she's set three records for the dental assistant program in Alaska... fastest to make DA 1, only person to finish the test under 45min., and she didn't miss any questions out of 250+ questions on said test. So ya she seems to like it. That and she fly's out a lot now to villages for a week at a time. She does that about once every month now.

Here's some more links that might help.
