Hi all,

We just filed in Melbourne, Australia, via DCF. They send the I-130 to Sydney, which then (hopefully) approves the petition and sends us "Packet 3." Among the documents requested in Packet 3 are the medical and police checks.

Given that these checks take a while to book in and process, is there any way to get them done before Packet 3 arrives? Is there any special documentation that needs to be taken to these checks that is available only when the consulate sends Packet 3, or can we get the checks done independently and have them ready by the time we receive Packet 3 in the mail?

Thanks in advance for any help.

It depends on the consulate and the people supplying the document.

For example, I'm filing in Dublin:

- you don't need to wait for the packet here before getting the medical done. But in London, because the clinic sends stuff direct to the embassy, you do need to wait (I think).

- the British and Irish police issued me a certificate no problem, but the Japanese police wanted it on paper that one was needed by the embassy. Luckily, they accepted a general printout of the requirements.

One thing you can definitely get ahead of the game on is tax information for the i-864. And have you got your vaccination records? You'll probably need them for the medical.

Dublin

March 1 2011: submit i-130 to Dublin, request medical records and police reports

March 20: told not enough evidence that we are actually resident in Ireland, i-130 returned

April 1: submitted again with lots of evidence.

May 9: Receive packet 3, return DS-230 part 1 and notice of readiness.

May 16: Receive notice of June 2 interview.

If you have a case number yeah you can go and get the medical done in OZ. Police report not sure about Melbourne but need to call local police station and request a report with fingerprinting.

Hi there - I'm interested on how you go through this process as I'm (US citizen) about to filing the I 130 (for my husband) in Sydney on April 28th. We are going ahead with the police checks here in Sydney but we need a case number to get our medical exam here. I have heard about people calling up the Doctor's (here in Sydney) and being able to get the medical done without the case #. I think it depends on which Doctor you go to and how 'strict' they are with needing the case number or not. Can't hurt to ask right ?

Good luck with everything and interested in how you get on.

Hi flanags. It looks like there's a VERY short list of what doctors may do the medical exam. Here's what i found: http://travel.state.gov/pdf/medical/SYD-MED-ENGL-0007-1003.pdf

Let me know how you go with getting a medical done without a case number.

(Oh, and to the mods - I noticed that I accidentally called this "medical + dental" in the thread topic, rather than "medical + police." Obviously skipping ahead to getting health insurance in the States. :)

Hi there!

I'm not doing DCF but just to let you know...I already booked in for my medical before I got my NOA2. Don't have a case number yet...but that wasn't an issue for me. I called Dr Millar's office and got an appointment easily...they didn't even ask for a case number. I've been told by others here on VJ that the other Sydney panel physician - Dr Waks i think - wont give you an appointment without a case number.

Good luck!

Thanks for this. My husband will be calling Dr. Millar to get his medical done before Packet 3 arrives. Police checks already sent in but need case number to do Hong Kong police check. Oh well - atleast we'll have everything ready before then. I also heard that an interview can sometimes be granted if you are waiting for a police check to arrive (such as the HK one) however no visa will be granted until the clearance arrives. Still a long way to go before we get to that point however. Let's just get past the I 130 petition on Thursday !

Husband got his medical done here in Sydney without needing a case number. Thanks for the recommendation on which Dr. to use. We did however at the time of filing the I130 ask for a letter from the consulate so that we can get a HK police check done. They require a letter and the check-list. The Sydney consular officer was overly helpful and provided us with the letter. Our appointment was at 10am to file the I 130 and with asking for the letter we were out by 10:20am.

we need to get police clearance / checks from the USA, HK and here in Oz so we wanted to get the ball rolling.

Your welcome. Glad you got it sorted out!

I could be completely wrong on this - my apologies if I am - but I didn't think you needed police certificates from the US? Like I said could be wrong...and maybe the requirements are different for you since you are doing DCF... but in the stuff I've read (embassy website I think....kinda lose track after you spend hours reading about the visa process lol!) says that you don't need a police certificate to cover any time spent in the US, so maybe look into that? Just thought I'd mention that so you don't waste time and money on something you might not need.

Hope the consulate is just as efficient in setting interviews lol...that's where I will be up to very soon!

You don't need them for the US; they run an FBI namecheck.

Ohhhh. This is very interesting indeed and would be very helpful. So even though my husband (Australian) citizen worked in the US for two years you think he may not need the US police clearance ??? This is very interesting information indeed and I'll follow up on that. I may pull this post out and ask on a separate thread to see if I can get any more responses.

Thank you soo much for this tidbit of information. You guys rock !!

Just confirming this. NO police check required for the US because they do that themselves.

Here's the list of doctors from the US Embassy in Aus: http://photos.state.gov/libraries/adelaide/171311/consular/Medical%20Instruct%20With%20List%20of%20Doctors_001.pdf

Here's the I-130 instructions: http://canberra.usembassy.gov/i-130.html

Here's the Police check instructions for Australia: http://canberra.usembassy.gov/obtain_police_cert.html and here it is on the US travel site: http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3195.html#police which also mentions no need for a US police check.

You're in Melb I assume. I had no issue booking the medical before having a case number. As it turned out I got the case number in time for the appointment so that worked out. The medical didn't take any time at all to book. Maybe a week to get the appointment and a week to get the docs.

I was able to get a copy of my baby immunisation records from my mum (but also available at the council I was born in and lived at because it was a council thing). If you can't find your records you can see your doctor and get a blood titre done. Here is the immunisation requirements: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=3384cc5222ff5210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=6abe6d26d17df110VgnVCM1000004718190aRCRD but here is the list that explains at what ages you need what shots and how many of what (just in case you wanted to try and get them done at your family doc though I doubt it matters): http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/schedules/downloads/adult/mmwr-adult-schedule.pdf (page 2) but note that HPV and Zoster are no longer required.

The police check I also did before getting P3 (though I did a K1 it has the same requirements). The link I posted above explains it. You download the form from the Fed website then take it to a local station to get the prints done for it. Mine took about twice as long as it was supposed to.
