All, Beneficiary doesn't speak English at all. Can beneficiary request translator at consulate when interview is conducted? We never done this before so asking your help, if anyone without knowing English language was successful at interview. Can they reject the beneficiary for not knowing English? All foreign necessary documents are translated in English, the only problem the beneficiary does not know English language at all.

No US consulate requires the beneficiary to interview in English. The CO's often speak the local language to some degree, and they always have translators available who can speak the local language, though the translators don't always do a bang up job of it. In some countries, they intentionally mis-translate in order to help sink the interview. The language spoken at the interview would generally only be a problem if the beneficiary speaks neither English nor the local language; e.g., a beneficiary interviewing in a country other than their native country or who speaks a regional language not many people speak in that country.

Another potential problem is whether you speak your fiancee's language. If you two don't have a common language then that can be a big problem, especially in a high fraud country.

Thank you for your reply, yes we both speak common language, however she doesn't speak english. In uzbekistan people speak uzbek and russian. My fiancee does speak both of them but english. I am hoping consulate speaks one of those local languages.

since there is not enough time for my fiancee to learn english, she probably will speak her native language, since uzbek is the first language and russian is the second language, she probley will try to speak uzbek, then if no one speaks uzbek language she will try to speak russian. hopefully someone will translate to english. maybe I will also teach her some english words for her to use when she is talking her native language, such as fiance, marry in 90 days and etc...

try to go with her, I knew someone with a similar situation, they both went together and when the non US citizen couldn't answer the questions, the US citizen stepped in and helped out. if she is going to apply in Uzbakistan then Im sure the embassy has some one who speaks that language.

In the event that the beneficiary speaks the local language fluently but has limited English skills, would it be better to just stick with the native language?

Yes, that's the best bet, cause you don't wanna make any mistakes or cause confusion in any of the questions at the interview.

Find a job you love to do, and you will never work another day in your life.

I do not think petitioner are allowed to go to the interview with her. She is only person who is allowed when the interview is conducted.

Here is the text from consulate website:

Please Note: The American Citizen petitioner may not attend the interview with his or her fiancé(e).

I know Guangzhou China has become a two step process. When you go to give your biometrics the beneficiary can request a chinese speaking CO then. Check the US consulate site for the city where the interview will occur and see if they have anything under the visa page. You can call them also and explain the situation (making it known that you both speak a common language). If nothing else, that will establish a record at the consulate that you can communicate with each other easily

A recent post has been split from this old thread (which is now closed to further comment) and has been moved to the China regional subforum, with this thread title: "Translator Provided at Guangzhou? Can I Attend Interview? [split topic]."

VJ Moderation

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
