It does, but it makes more sense to complement that with a work visa program for those who wish to undertake manual labour positions in the US. If the wages were higher for these jobs more US citizens might want to take them up but if they don't provision should be available for employers to fill those positions with foreign workers if that is necessary.

Let the market work. I worked in construction for 10+ years and believe me there is plenty of "work only illegals will do" jobs that could easily be filled by Americans. Not being able to hire someone will drive up the wages but in a lot of cases that doesnt even apply.

Seriously? No need to get all butthurt. You posed a stupid question to which I responded. Sorry, I'm not going to make general comments about an entire group of people. If you have a specific question, I will respond. Some of the anti-immigration sentiment from some people on here is bourne of bigotry, some isn't. I'm not so stupid as to think that a general statement about all of the anti immigration comments.

 oh rob you never fail me. i hope your doctor doesn't change your meds.

I'm not going to get into with the anti-immigration crowd (yes, there are some here who are more or less against immigration) and I'll explain why:

  • You say, it's illegal immigration that you are against, not legal immigration, but when solutions to the current problems of having millions of undocumented people in this country, anything short of deporting them you regard as being pro-illegal, and you aren't willing to compromise. No path to legalization, not even for children brought here, no guest worker program.
  • Yet interestingly - you yourself have benefited from being able to bring a foreigner into this country by simply marrying them.
  • When U.S. immigration history is brought up, like the fact that Europeans essentially invaded this land and claimed it their own, you dismiss that as not being relevant because it happened long ago. Yet, the mere thought of offering a legal pathway for those who've been here several years makes you break out in hives.

See, the real argument is over immigration. You disguise your dislike around the word 'illegal' but offer no concessions or compromises for legal avenues for those who are already here. Some openly admit they want to limit immigration into this country (like peejay). So those who offer no compromise and no concessions to our current situation are either anally-retentive a$holes who only think about themselves and their foreign spouses, or xenophobic, or racist....or perhaps a little of all three. All the arguments as to why you aren't willing to make any concessions or compromise short of deportation points to that reality. So GFY.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I think I'm pretty soft on the illegal immigration problem. And, like you, I have a problem with people who won't accept any solution other than deportation.

But I think a HUGE problem is that, no matter what we do, if we don't find a way to secure the border then we'll just have this same problem over and over again.

By the way, GFY = Good For You??

I know alot of illegals, good and bad. There are many that live in my community and they all work really hard to get their necessities for themselves and their USC children. As of now some are getting their green cards, i personally don't have anything against them at all

Steven, are you in favor of properly securing the border? I am. I think that since you bring up the idea of potential compromise, you may be too.

Not me. I want open borders. Why should one's opportunities in life be limited by an accident of birth? I believe in equilibriums. Let things settle to their natural level, and less energy is expended plugging all the holes in the dike. Governments could actually become less relavant to people's lives, and that is a good thing.

The border is about as secure as it's going to be. It'll never be full proof and we've spent billions and will continue to spend billions to do what? Keep unskilled laborers from entering the workforce, earning a living and contributing to our economy?

The most viable solutions to prevent undocumented immigrations would be multifaceted. For one, renegotiate our trade policies with our neighbors to the south, including NAFTA, which caused tens of millions of Mexican farmers to lose their way of life. Second, help Mexico's economy become more on par with Canada and the U.S. (which was the promise of NAFTA). Third, expand/reform guest worker program to make it easier for employers who can show a need to hire foreign, unskilled workers.

All of this, I've talked about at length and in great detail over the years, but mostly to the deaf ears to the anti-immigrant members who don't want to make any concessions or compromises. The truth is, they just don't want them here, period.

I think we should carefully monitor who we let immigrate into this country, but I'm favor of more open borders as population growth is necessary for strong economy.
