What do you know about the illegal immigrant community in your area?

Nope; said nothing of the sort. In one of my earlier posts (q.v.), I said that I'd asked Mrs. T-B. whether SHE had asked the third parties' immigration status (q.v. her answer). In the end, these transactions were conducted willingly between service-buyers and service-sellers when neither had to buy or sell.

If we had found them on Craigslist or another site, or in an ad in a tabloid found in a newspaper rack near a supermarket entrance, we'd have done the same -- figured out whether the transaction of money-for-work would be mutually palatable. The only difference here was that Mrs. T-B. had to do the communicating due to language barriers, and we ended up with excellent independent contractors.

You hired illegals ?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

There was no way to know, because we didn't ax.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Has anyone learned anything about the illegals in their community since this thread died? Would anyone like to know more? What do you think of all of the US citizens that are benefiting from this?

I can't blame them.

I was at a local kabab place a few days ago. I overheard an interesting/weird conversation between the store manager's son (appears to be in his 20s) and one of his hispanic male employees who was (I presume) on break and eating. The employee was sitting at a table eating and the manager's son was behind the counter so he was speaking loudly. He told him he needs a girl to work the evening shift to closing. The employee responded yeah I know a girl. Manager's son asks him if she's single. Employee says yeah. Manager's son looks excited and says wow that's great - so no boyfriend or husband? Employee says no not anymore. Manager's son asks - what happened? Employee says he got deported. Manager's son - back to Honduras? Employee - yeah.. so she's kinda desperate. Manager's son - wow! that's awesome. bring her in after closing tomorrow, i'll talk to her. and let her know she doesn't have to worry about a ride, i can pick her up and drop her off. Employee says, ok, no problem, i breeng her in.

Is that a ride to work or a ride at work this manager's son is talking about?

The message I take from this;

Effecting a mass "round-up" and deportation, at this point, would be a greater miracle than Noah and the ark.

I think we should take a lesson from history.

google "joseph swing, operation wetback" and take a lesson from history.

deporting illegals en masse has been done, economically and effectively.

Spooky -

last fall my wife worked for a few weeks at a local Thai restaurant where one of her friends has been waitressing for years. Both my wife and her friend are legal. The restaurant pays in cash. There was no witholding for taxes or FICA, no W-4s, no ID check. There were about 5 others working there - waiting tables, bussing, dishwashing, cooking. All Thai. My wife spoke to them, and they told her that none of them are in the country legally. After about 3 weeks she got a better job and she left. The restaurant is still there and her friend works there, but I won't eat there.

Some of it would obviously depend what country you are from. If you interacted in the that community you wouldn't need to ask anyone anything. I hear all kinds of things that I shouldn't hear or people shouldn't tell me. You don't have the interaction to understand what I am talking about. You have answered my original question based upon your experience and knowledge and I thank you for your input.

I am quite interested in what everyone has to say about this and how much they know about the underground, how the illegals get SS#, DL, etc, etc.

I haven't read past this comment yet... but figured I'd respond before I lost track of where this was... A friend of my father's used to work with 2 illegal Mexicans (about 10 years back). There were 3 of them, the one was a LPR, so of course he drove his 2 brothers around. I also remember my father stating that the one had a dead man's SSC. Not sure how exactly that works. Lol.

It's also been done illegally, but I wouldn't expect facts and laws to concern someone like you.

That reminds me of something 'weird' I noticed a few weeks ago. A latina cashier at a local fast food joint who had a 9 digit number in the format xxx-xx-xxxx written in ink on her arm. I asked her if it was her first day, she nodded. I asked her if she liked the job and I think I hit the limit of her knowledge in the English language because she just looked confused and then ignored it.

I can you how it is down around here, and perhaps elsewhere. Several migrants will go together to buy a car from a private party. They take turns driving, and the one who has a driver's license leaves it in the glovebox for the others to use. If they get in an accident, or something happens to the car, they walk away, because the vehicle isn't registered or insured.

Same thing with SSN. Several will find jobs, using the same name and SSN. Of course, they never bother filing taxes, and if the employer gets wise, they just look for a different job. It's not unusual for each of them to work for several employers at the same time, taking part time jobs.

Think that's how she remembered the number? Lol.
