Surprising Finds on Religious Women's Sex Lives

New research from the Guttmacher Institute may debunk the idea that religion and sex don't mix. Using data gathered from a 2006-2008 survey of more than 7,000 US women ages 15-44, this report found that women of a variety of religions — Protestant, Catholic, and Buddhism included — are having sex and using contraception.

These findings are released in the midst of the Planned Parenthood funding debate and help the organization's cause as they show that women from all backgrounds depend on birth control. Maybe even a religious version of the "I have sex" video is in the works? See five of the surprising stats on religious women and their sex lives:

1.Despite the Catholic church being against contraception, only two percent of devout Catholic women rely on natural family planning.

2.The number of never-married 15- to 19-year-olds who have had sex is 42 percent, with similar numbers across all denominations.

3.Ninety-nine percent of all sexually active religious women have used contraception other than natural family planning.

4.More Evangelical than Catholic or Protestant virgins give religious or moral reasons for abstaining from sex, 63 percent vs. 31 and 36, respectively.

5.Sixty-nine percent of sexually experienced women of all denominations are using "highly effective methods" including sterilization, a hormonal method like the pill, or IUD.

What has been your experience with religious beliefs and sexuality?

They needed a study to determine this?

I suppose that's what to expect from NY/Washington Liberals though.

Not having a damn clue about the rest of society and living on 'words' just like the religious nuts they hate.

Seriously, this is not new to anyone who lives in "flyover country."

women of a variety of religions — Protestant, Catholic, and Buddhism included —
How journalistically accurate of them to include "Protestant, Catholic, and Buddhism" within the category of "a variety of religions," duh man.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

But what has it got to do with planned parenthood getting federal funding? People use birth control. Most people realize that. That doesn't mean that taxpayer money should be used to pay for it. Just because lots of different people use birth control this should be a reason for taxpayers to pay for birth control? Lots of people use cars, shoes, cell phones, light bulbs, and chairs. People of all different backgrounds. Should taxpayer money be used to pay for these, too?

It seems like they are trying to put a political slant on a study that should have gotten a big "they got paid to do this study?".

I'm not sure where you got Planned Parenthood from religion and sex, but Planned Parenthood does a lot more than provide birth control. It is mainly women's healthcare provider, which in fact means that it ENSURES the fertility of American women by treating issues that affect fertility, such as PCOS, HPV, and many others. It provides gynelogical checkups to women on a sliding scale fee, and for a large segment of women, especially young women--those whose wombs will be needed for childbearing, the only thing about women that many politicians seem to value--it is the ONLY place where they can get absolutely essential preventative care, since the rest of the health system is so messed up.

Men, too, utilize the services of Planned Parenthood. http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/men-4285.htm Do you support, say, prostate and colon cancer screenings for men who cannot afford to see a physician otherwise? HIV testing? Hell, they'll even cure your jock itch for you. If they were not able to receive preventative care at an affordable cost at PP, then they would have to turn to what? Medicaid? Bankruptcy to pay for medical bills? And then the government would have pay a whole lot more.

I just wish that people would actually look at what the organization they're criticizing actually does before making decisions that can have drastic impacts on peoples' lives.

Supprising as it may seem to you Paul, you do need accurate and factual data in order to reach rational, substantiated conclusions. Simply saying something is true because you think it should be based on personal experience is not a substitute for proper research, although I know you think somehow it is and should be. I am quite sure that you can't imagine for the life of you what practical application such research could possibly have either. For you such studies are just a bunch of ####### liberal hippy nutters wasting time and money, but again, just because you don't know why or how it could have a practical application doesn't mean that it doesn't.

anyone remember that christian women's sex site? I think I need to find that.

This one http://christiannymphos.org/

“Be fully released to embrace all that God wants for your marriage! Ignite that intimacy with your husband, and grow in Christ together! Witness to others about Jesus, and at the same time, let them see you as a healthy, strong, happily married woman. Be a role model to other young women who need someone to look up to and talk to. Instruct them on marriage and don’t shy away from sexual questions they have. Young women need experienced women to talk to and get sound, Christian advice from. Let us honor God by showing these women what He wants for them in marriage!”
