California set to teach gay history and rights in schools

Children would take lessons on issues affecting gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people, with schools granted discretion about what age to start the lessons.

The law was passed by the state's senate and is likely to pass the assembly easily, which is also controlled by the Democrats, before being signed by Governor Jerry Brown.

The legislation, sponsored by Democrat Mark Leno of San Francisco, passed on a 23-14 party line vote.

"We are second-class citizens and children are listening," he said. "When they see their teachers don't step up to the plate when their classmate is being harassed literally to death, they are listening and they get the message that there is something wrong with those people."

Republican state Senator Doug La Malfa opposed the bill saying: "I'm deeply troubled kids would have to contemplate at a very, very early age, when many of us are teaching abstinence ... what is sexuality."

California law already requires schools to cover the contributions to the state and nation of women, African Americans, Mexican Americans, entrepreneurs, Asian Americans, European Americans, American Indians and labour activists. The new bill will also add the disabled to the list.

Why can't they learn history where people regardless of their skin color or gender are taught? Why now the need to teach them of the history subjects sexual practices? Why should Puritanical biases be impressed on the rest of America? This is an example of a Tenth Amendment issue. Schools are not a Federal concern if you believe in small government. If you don't like what California does, don't live in California.

It doesn't matter what the public school is teaching. If the parents care enough, they will take their kids from such a cesspool, and put in a private school that teaches an appropriate curriculum. Be it working 2 or 3 jobs to get their kids in there. If the parents leave their kids in a school where trash is taught, then that is a conscious choice. When they had the kids, they gave up their selfish lives and must now sacrifice for their children if they give a hoot for their offsprings' future. It really is that simple. Word.

What young age? It says it's open to discretion, it doesn't say that 5 years olds will be taught this. I would imagine that teachers are competent enough to decide what age is appropriate for the material they wish to teach.

That's why my parents sent me to a private high school with a LGBTQ literature class elective and a safe zone sign in every classroom.

Heaven forbid we lower teen pregnancy and STD rates by advocating a balanced approach to sexual health and making sure that if teenagers are going to be having sex (and they will), that they go about in the safest, healthiest way possible. We can't have THAT. Yes, preserving abstinence-only sex "education" is certainly a top priority.

I don't see why sexual practices would be a part of a course on understanding the history of homosexuality in America. You can learn about Stonewall and Harvey Milk and ACT UP and why they are/were significant without needing a diagram of how gay sex works. Do you go into Albert Einstein's numerous extramarital affairs when discussing the Theory of Relativity?

He sits and calls everyone a bigot for every little thing they say against once group or another, yet fails to realize his own intolerance of certain groups makes him a bigot as well.

From your comments in this thread Paul, I would say no, you don't know what bigotry is. This isn't teaching a 'lifestyle' as you phrase it. People don't choose to be gay, it's something they are born as.
