Hello fellow VJ members!

I am not sure this is the correct forum to post my question, but here goes:

Could anyone recommend a particular credit card or credit card company for a new immigrant?

My fiance just received his Social Security Number in the mail last week and I want him to begin

to build a good credit history, yet I do not want him to apply for credit cards for which he will

be turned down and thereby further hurt his chances of obtaining a credit card...

Any advice?

August 23, 2010 - I-129 F package sent via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation.

August 30, 2010 - Per Department of Homeland Security (DHS) e-mail, petition received and routed to California Service Center for processing. Check cashed. I-797C Notice of Action by mail (NOA 1) - Received date 08/25/2010. Notice date 08/27/2010.

After 150 days of imposed anxious patience...

January 24, 2011 - Per USCIS website, petition approved and notice mailed.

January 31, 2011 - Approval receipt notice (NOA 2) received by mail. Called NVC, given Santo Domingo case number, and informed that petition was sent same day to consulate.

Called Visa Specialist at the Department of State every day for a case update. Informed of interview date on February, 16 2011. Informed that packet was mailed to fiance on February, 15 2011.

February 21, 2011 - Fiance has not yet received packet. Called 1-877-804-5402 (Visa Information Center of the United States Embassy) to request a duplicate packet in person pick-up at the US consulate in Santo Domingo. Packet can be picked-up by fiance on 02/28.

March 1, 2011 - Medical exam completed at Consultorios de Visa in Santo Domingo.

March 9, 2011 at 6 AM - Interview, approved!

March 18, 2011 - POE together. JFK and O'Hare airports. Legal wedding: May 16, 2011.

A secured card is a good way to start. Also a department store (Sears, Macys, etc) is a good starter.

Hello fellow VJ members!

It's a Capital One card designed for newcomers, the limit is only $500 but it's a great way to start. I applied and got approved instantly on their website. Give it a try, good luck!

NOA2: 19-Jan-2011

NVC Received file from CSC: 27-Jan-2011

Received DS-3032 and AOS bill: 27-Jan-2011

Paid AOS bill: 28-Jan-2011

Submitted DS-3032 via email (per NVC's authorization): 30-Jan-2011

Called NVC about AOS packet: 3-Feb-2011 (okay to send documents)

Mailed out AOS packet: 5-Feb-2011

AOS packet delivered to NVC: 7-Feb-2011

DS-3032 received by NVC: 8-Feb-2011

NVC Acknowleges AOS payment: 8-Feb-2011 (finally)

Received IV Bill: 14-Feb-2011

Paid IV Bill: 14-Feb-2011

NVC Acknowledges AOS paperwork was received and requests IV application: 25-Feb-2011

Mailed out DS-230 and supporting civil documents: 26-Feb-2011

DS-230 packet delivered to NVC: 28-Feb-2011

Husband received visa from DOMEX: 17-May-2011

He was turned down for the card suggested... I guess a secured card will be the way to go.

Get a secured card (maybe $300 to $400) and then in 1 year cancel the secured card (and they will return your $300 to $400).

I am willing to bet you will get at least 3 credit card solicitations in the mail 3 to 7 months out.

If you happen to see anything from Chase bank (Saphhire or Freedom) then immediately accept it. They'll give you $100 if you spend $500 in the first 3 months and they give very high credit limits (wife got $5,000 and I got $7,500).

Put 35% immediately on your secured card and pay $5 to $10 over the minimum each month. So if you have $400 limit put maybe $140 on it and continue to pay $20 to $25 a month for the next 8 months just so you have a history of paying on time.

If you are feeling bold then before surrendering to the "secured cc route" try for 1 more unsecured card but don't apply online (the computer will reject you)....You need to call the company and speak with a credit card analyst over the phone. My first was in 2007 with Merrill Lynch (now owned by Bank of America)...They approved me for $1,000 with no credit whatsoever and 1 collection due to not paying a traffic ticket back in 2003...

I'm new here so I started with a secured credit card from capital one. I paid a deposit of $99 and I've got a credit line of $250. I shopped around and i think that the secured credit card from capital one is the best. They also have a a free service creditinform for new customers.
