Mexico is way too big of a country with way too much diversity to answer these questions, unless you were more specific. Buy Lonely Planet or check out Wiki Travel http://wikitravel.org/en/Main_Page.

Never been to TJ (Tijuana?) before....

I would highly recommend changing your destination to Acapulco, Mexico...That is where my wife is from.

Actually, I have a free stay at a resort in Acapulco anytime between May and October....I plan to sell it or put it on ebay...

We always stay at the Grand Mayan and it is fantastic...Perfect weather 11 months of the year...Rarely a cloud in the blue sky and sun blazing...Steps from the ocean.

Fresh fish.....fishing trips....beautiful views....nice friendly people....amazing food....mountains....cliff divers....tropical

Send me a PM if you might consider Acapulco instead...Tijuana is a little more on the dangerous side from what I have heard and I'm not sure it is the best tourist destination

India, gun buyback and steamroll.

Mexico is all pretty much a ####### shoot due to drug cartel violence and big money influence. Be it TJ or somewhere else. Acapulco isn't a bed of roses, either....

It's not as bad as the papers make it out to be. Acapulco has a lot of people there and we were just there in December....We went to Wal-mart and downtown and into the market....all throughout the city, taxi rides, sight seeing...We didn't see one sign of any fishy activity..

We also visited her mom (who lives there). She lives up in the mountain in what I guess you could say is a small village...However the main street on the flat land is extremely busy....

You would have a better chance of being robbed or killed visiting Detroit than you would visiting Acapulco.

It's not that bad in most of the Texas/Mexico border cities, either, in my first-hand observation. I haven't been back to any of them in 7 months, and I'm experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

thats a pretty generalized statement and a bit ignorant.. citing one news story doesn't mean much either since many of those news stories are embellished, sometimes to the point of ridiculousness.

I live in Mexico now with my Fiance while we wait out this process so I can offer a more educated opinion.. It is true that Acapulco has had some issues but there are MANY areas of Mexico that are perfectly safe to visit. In fact, according to the U.S. it's safe enough to make people go to Ciudad Juarez for visa interviews...

Mexico is a beautiful country, but Tijuana is probably not the best place to go for your first Mexico experience. I've never been to Acapulco and I'm sure it's beautiful and probably safe as long as you stay in the touristy areas, don't talk to strange people and don't make drug deals ;-).. pretty much the rules for visiting any foreign country.

Boing!, it's not ok to make statements like that when you don't have firsthand experience and are just relying on the "news".. notice my use of quotes.

I was strongly thinking these things, si man, but didn't say them, no man.

I have been to Tijuana, but that was years ago. Yet, why go to a place that is infamous for being dangerous? Also, Tijuana is like a party town for Americans because they can go over the border and drink, party, etc. and generally misbehave without any problems. However, even this partying has changed with the drug violence that has taken over many parts of the country. If you must go to Mexico, why not go to a nicer and safer part of the country?

August 23, 2010 - I-129 F package sent via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation.

August 30, 2010 - Per Department of Homeland Security (DHS) e-mail, petition received and routed to California Service Center for processing. Check cashed. I-797C Notice of Action by mail (NOA 1) - Received date 08/25/2010. Notice date 08/27/2010.

After 150 days of imposed anxious patience...

January 24, 2011 - Per USCIS website, petition approved and notice mailed.

January 31, 2011 - Approval receipt notice (NOA 2) received by mail. Called NVC, given Santo Domingo case number, and informed that petition was sent same day to consulate.

Called Visa Specialist at the Department of State every day for a case update. Informed of interview date on February, 16 2011. Informed that packet was mailed to fiance on February, 15 2011.

February 21, 2011 - Fiance has not yet received packet. Called 1-877-804-5402 (Visa Information Center of the United States Embassy) to request a duplicate packet in person pick-up at the US consulate in Santo Domingo. Packet can be picked-up by fiance on 02/28.

March 1, 2011 - Medical exam completed at Consultorios de Visa in Santo Domingo.

March 9, 2011 at 6 AM - Interview, approved!

March 18, 2011 - POE together. JFK and O'Hare airports. Legal wedding: May 16, 2011.

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.

If you'r looking for somewhere close to San Diego why not go farther south in Baja California, like Cabo San Lucas or Ensenada. Beaches, fishing and you can chose between small villages or areas with more tourists, where prices will be higher but you might feel more comfortable for example you'll find English speakig people.
