To me, diversity as something that can strengthen a society (listed in previous answer inside parenthesis- as a couple of examples) contribute beyond the diverse arenas in which things develop. In some case, as you yourself describe, the value is generally meaningless because the diversity is cosmetic and not substantive.

The kind of diversity you describe as a blunder is one where the blender doesn't homogenize everything 100%. What you get with this are areas of uniqueness within a national fabric. Perhaps what you should consider then is the resistance (as well as the resistance to integrate) by the 'natives' and all that means, to a more heterogeneous- yet united, society. It would be possible if people got their collective rods out of their rear ends and realized that people are people.
