Sad as it is...me and my wife are filing for divorce, for a number of reasons beyond our control...I just wanted to know if anyone knew what the procedure in terms of being a citizen is. I was made a citizen in September of 2010, and we are filing from seperation of December 2010...

Will they take it away from me, do i have to go through any procedures with the government...im a little scared.

No they will not take it away from you? Why do you think they would? Your divorce goes through your local courts and immigration is not involved.

I can understand that perhaps in your mind it may look bad to separate only a few months after getting citizenship, but life happens :(

Really don't want to get into a divorce for reasons beyond your control, the reasons for my wifes' and my divorce from our previous marriage was well within our control and demanded.

In her country and mine in Wisconsin, someone can sit down and try to explain to me this stupid no-fault divorce law, but can guarantee you, they won't get anywhere with me on this subject, positivity stupid. My ex was not taking care of my kids, running all over the place blowing money faster than I could earn it. Even took in $80,000.00 worth of receipts for the money she had blown, doesn't count, she still got half of everything that was left. Wife made all the payments on her condo plus the one she purchased entirely on her own. Her problem was her ex was beating her, but he left the country six years before to avoid being arrested. That SOB is still getting half of everything due to no-fault divorce laws in her country. But still needed his permission to bring his daughter her.

But now you are a US citizen, can enjoy your divorce for whatever reason, you are done with the USCIS.

The moment you surrendered your Green Card and became a US citizen, you were done with the immigration people. At the same time your A (Alien-) number became the USCIS Registration Number.

Nothing you can do short of treason and terrorist acts against the United States will jeopardize what you have achieved.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915
