You might want to check viarail, thats how I'm going.

It leaves from union station and drops you off at Montreal's central station.

It takes about 5 hours but its more roomy that a plane, it has wi-fi, you don't have to go through the hell that is Pearson airport AND most importantly its $155 roundtrip per person. So MUCH cheaper than flying!

Good luck! My interview is on the 28th,so nervous!!!

We rented a car and drove, we couldn't afford the flight, plus hotel, plus taxi. Look into driving if cost is important to you.

Good luck

But yes, Pierre Trudeau Airport is the big one you'd fly into, not sure if there is a smaller one

Me, my wife and my stepson will be driving from Toronto to Montreal this upcoming Tuesday. Even cheaper than VIA Rail... not to mention the Canadian airfares and airport taxes that are just outrageous...

I am flying in from NS. I used airmiles so it was cheaper than VIA for me. If you do decide to fly. You can take a taxi from the airport to the consulate and it will cost approx $40. I am taking the shuttle I think it is called the 747. It makes just a few stops in the downtown area. There is a bus every 15 minutes. You would get off at the 2nd stop which is about 2 blocks from the consulate from what I can tell on the map. It's $8. a person. Now I did hear through the grapevine that if you return within 24 hours that your return trip is free, but don't quote me on that :-)

I took VIA rail as well, but I purchased my tickets when they were having their 50% off fares promotion. As mentioned, it takes you directly to Gare Central (which is near Rene Levesque Blvd.) Essentially it bring you into the heart of Montreal and approx. 15-20 min. walk to the U.S. Embassy.

I preferred the train since the price is reasonable, it's on time, and you don't have to deal with traffic. Plus the seating is much more comfortable compared to planes, buses, and cars.

Wow thanks for the replyies everyone! Flying was our first choice.......but I think we are going to take ViaRail there.....then fly back. We don't want to be stuck on a train for 5hrs with bad news (if it's bad news) Plus I'll be going back to California on May 5th ...2 days after his interview....and I have to pack. But I do agree all thos taxes and fares they add on to flying sucks!

Your welcome! I used it for my flight from toronto to Atlanta, the best thing to do is check it many diff times, one time i checked my flight it was 500.00 then i couldnt sleep that night, and i checked it at 3am and it was 315.00! so i booked it right there! so its best to check a few times, especally during the night, and during the day when most people are working.

good luck!

Its hard for us, we have to get my wife and two kids from Winnipeg to Montreal not once but twice.

I also want to try and be there for the interview, which means a 4th ticket from Texas to Montreal.

Not looking forward to the cost of this bit.

It might be cheaper for your wife and kids to stay in Montreal for the few days between the medical and the interview? It takes 3 business after the medical to pick it up. Something to check into.

I do belive at the downtown MTL train stn--there is a Shuttle that will take u to downtown hotels for free. Its the same shuttle if you were to take the L'aerobus from the Airport to the train stn!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
