Insurance between POE and marriage

Okay guys and girls. This is a question to all, but specifically Brits.

Anyone who has recently moved to the USA on a K1 visa. Did you insure yourself between the period of POE and marriage?

All being well we will be married within a week of my arrival, and on my fiancee's(by then wifes) medical policy by the beginning of May. But is there any way to insure yourself medically in the interim. Or do I just have to wrap myself in cotton wool for a week

I don't think that regular travel insurance from the U.K would cover this. But I just wanted to ask other peoples opinions and thoughts first.

Thanks for reading

Double check that you can be added to the policy even after getting married. I was told 'No', not until the Green Card is in hand, even with a valid SSN and being married. Of course, I was shopping a new policy for myself and asked about adding my fiancee after marriage. It may or may not be a problem on a group policy or it's always possible the agent with whom I spoke was clueless.

Good luck and curious to see what others have done..

Hello!

I had the same concerns. When I tried, I was unable to get any travel insurance as I did not have a 'return date' to the UK.

My husband enquired about having me put on his insurance temporarily as a 'dependent' as the K1 requires the USC to be fully responsible for the intending immigrant. We didn't end up doing that but it might be worth checking with your fiancées insurance about that?

We took the risk and I was without insurance for a month. We had me added just after our wedding.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advise. I think we will probably end up doing the same as you. I will just have to be super careful for that week.

I was able to get a temporary insurance through AXA insurance(the French branch) but I believe they are in the UK too. They had an option for people residing in the US, it was something like 80 euros a month, I took it for 2 months, until I could get under my husband's insurance.

I see that your local USCIS is in Fairfax, VA, where will you be living? I am close, in Alexandria, VA.

Thanks! I will look in to that.

I'm not absolutely sure that Fairfax will be our place to go. We will be southwest VA. Near Roanoke

There are lots of little things like this that crop up with the K1! :) Someone described it to me as 'immigration purgatory' and I liked that :)

I see your interview is coming up, good luck! I met a fellow K1 at the Goulds pharmacy where you drop off your belongings and chatting helped occupy me during the 3 hour wait at the Embassy. Good luck for your interview!!

Get your fiance to check their state, I know that in MN I am able to get interm insurance for $193 per month. I am bringing the quote with me to the interview to show I intend to get health insurance. My fiance is covered under VA so I am not covered after marriage. As a side note when my family traveled to the Dominican for my daughter's wedding my son-in-law had emergency life saving surgery, they WAITED until they verifed his insurance before operating.

Good thinking. I took out two months of insurance from these guys:

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!
