Errrrm... Just to add some fuel to the fire.

http://www.nytimes.c...ion/21thu3.html

The bill, a much-needed updating and strengthening of the nation’s half-century-old Equal Pay Act, would enhance remedies for victims of gender-based wage discrimination, shield employees from retaliation for sharing salary information with co-workers and require employers to show that wage differences are job-related rather than sex-based, and justified by business necessity.

If "enhanced remedies"= higher settlements, that's something we definitely don't need. Employees should be shielded from sharing salary information, but are they not already?

More government intervention for private employers. Just what we need!

Really? You think it would be OK for private employers to continue to pay women less salary than men just because they have a ####### instead of a #######? This is not about government intervention, it is about gender equality, which employers will not respect unless they are forced to do so by law. As depressing as that is, it's still a reality in many countries, including in my own. This issue should be a no-brainer, and yet, in year 2011 we still need to argue about whether or not women are equal with their male counterparts. Ridiculous, I say. But that's just me.

What gets me about regulating the workplace is 90% (not intended to be a factual statement) of people who claim discrimination can get fired for doing or not doing something that's not even remotely related to the discrimiation.

"You fired me because I'm ________."

"No, we fired you because you're late to work every day."
