Changing Name On Passport. Please advise

Hi guys,

My wife is going to be traveling back to the Philippines in August and her Philippine passport will expire the next month in September. She had her passport before we got married so it is in her maiden name.

We got married in New York, but now reside in Hawaii and we did not know about the reporting of marriage to the NY Philippine consulate there. So the Hawaii PI consulate will not let us renew her passport in her married name unless we first report it and get some paperwork from the NY consulate...(what a headache). They will however allow us to renew her Philippine passport in her maiden name.

My main question is...would it be wise of us to just renew her passport here in Hawaii under her maiden name and have her get it changed to her married name while she is in the Philippines? If so, what documentation does she need to bring with her?

Also, is there any real reason why she would need to change her passport to her married name? If not then maybe we will not even bother.

Thank you guys so much for your time and advice!!

When I renewed my passport to my married name, basically i went to an agency so they'd set an appointment at the DFA (Dept. of Foreign Affairs), and then took the CFO seminar and the agency basically did everything. but for you, i suggest calling DFA for more detailed info. But my aunt who works in Brunei, she always renews her passport here in the PI and there's no problem, the only difficulty is getting an appointment at the DFA coz, theres a new system when I scheduled an appointment for my daughter it took 2months. I hope someone with better knowledge sheds some light

Hi Krisca thank you so much for the reply. How do I get in contact with the DFA? im assuming that they are based in the Philippines? Also, are there other DFA offices located around the Philippines or only in Manila? My wife will be going to cagayan de oro city mainly.

Also, what does CFO stand for?

She still has a 4-5 months until her trip to the Philippines, so hopefully we can schedule ahead if it takes a couple of months to wait for the appointments.

I am not all that familiar with the rules of passport renewal for the PI, but can't your wife renew her passport in the US prior to her departure? It might be a procedure you can check into now, and maybe even have it done thru an embassy in the US prior to her departure.

Maybe info here: http://www.philippineconsulatela.org/consular%20services/conserv-ppt.htm#RenPass

Good luck!
