really? in OK the schools have full kitchens & a staff that does cook the meals. the districts i'm familiar with do anyway.

CT, VA, NC, TX school districts I've seen all have kitchens & staff that cook meals. There may be some districts ... where ymmv ... be interesting to see a school district that brings food in "airplane service style"

like slash said ... i've also not seen a slaughter house attached to the kitchen

I look at the world through a lens that understands the nastiness of mankind. I have very little faith in people when it comes to truly doing the right thing and not creating a system that is reactionary.

With that being said, once liberty in one form or another is taken away, it's damn near impossible to get it back.

The only thing that breeds true change and liberty is revolution. Even in that scenario though, you better be damn sure that you can win, because if you don't your liberty will fall short of where it was even before.

The 'fair' system of government that we initially had at the founding of this nation has formed into something no where near what it was/what it's supposed to be. So much of this has to do with the nationalization of everyting as I have explained time and time again.

Exactly, you simply don't see things as they really are. This post clearly demonstrates that.

It might be news to you Paul, but democracy implies that policies will change dependent on the 'mood' of the people at each election. Expecting the US to remain static and have a democratic system of government is schizophrenic

When all you have is a hammer....

California sucks.

Sometimes it does. Can you imagine, a state full of nut eating hippies and not a school kitchen in sight? Makes you think.

And although, I don't think that the school's policy is right, what kind of parents pack chips and soda for their kid's lunch? Is that true or is it just what the school says, justifying their lunch-policy?

Lots of parents do exactly that. Pack ####### lunches. I do not justify a silly school policy, but I need to have better information about the alternative the school is offering instead of packed lunches. Educating parents would be so much better, although we can already imagine that many- like some on this message board- are completely hopeless when it comes to making wise choices.

What kind of food? Putting on sausages, fries, burgers and frozen pizza slices is only "cooking" in the loosest possible meaning of the word

California is the best example of a large American state that has utterly neglected its public schools.

Educating people via a system is never going to work very well. That said, there are systems that are ok and ones that suck and in my extremely limited experience of CA schools, in some ways the CA system sucks big time. Luckily, there are still some highly educated and excellent people trying to work within the system, and of course one can always outsource extra tuition as and when necessary.

There are nutritional requirements that school cafeterias must meet.

The kids, of course, are free to eat whatever they want. No one can make them take back a plate balanced with veggies and wings. Most of the kids will load up on the wings, there's not much you can do about that.

I get that, but I'm curious if the schools cook from scratch (from fresh ingredients) or if it's mainly reheating pre-prepared food.

Add corndogs and canned pears to that list and you have the complete food pyramid.

You prefer a more chaotic alternative?

Did I say that? I was simply stating my opinion that education and systems are not that compatible. It's something I have been thinking a lot about because I currently have a child in the 'system' and my experience tells me that what the system does not do is find the individual talents of each child and develop them. What it does is cater to the average because schools are funded in ways that reward limited success by lots of people, not excellence in anything.

I have for example discovered that in math, in order to maintain a great average for the school, rather than reward understanding of math, what is rewarded is diligence in math.

Around here, it's in between.

For example - school cafeterias will buy frozen uncooked beef patties and cook the burgers on site. They don't actually slaughter the animal nor do they make the patties on-site so it's not truly "from scratch".

For salads, they aren't actually cutting up lettuce on-site either. Shredded lettuce is provided to the schools (much in the way it is provided to a Subway) and the salads are assembled on site. The lettuce isn't grown on school premises so not "from scratch" either.

Fact is, there is ideal and there is economical and all levels of government (that is what a public school system is) have to make a choice that strikes the right balance. Schools in California apparently made the choice to buy cooked food and reheat on site. Schools here buy uncooked food and cook on site.
