One of my very favo(u)rite words is "navigatrix," si man.

In 1932, my dad was cycling with my mother along a country road which had a tight right hand bend.

At the apex of the bend, a small muddy cart track went off to the left or 'straight on'

depending on your brain construction

As they approached the bend in the main road, my mother was in front and called back "which way". My dad shouted "Straight on". He saw the cart track as a left.

She went hurtling up the muddy cart track while he leaned and speeded through the right hand bend and as he did so, - HE LAUGHED !

Even 70 years later she went red with anger when recalling this incident

He laughed !

the reason it happened is that type of plane it too big for all airports here. it hangs something like 93ft off of each side of the "lanes" they taxi on

And the 747-800 that is coming along too - some airports are fine with these superjumbos, some aren't. JFK, like some other US airports, had to get a waiver from the FAA to take the extra-large aircraft, so the FAA will now be looking into the incident and the instructions within the waiver documet.

From that video, either the regional jet didn't pull for enough forward or the A380 shouldn't have been released until the regional had cleared to the apron.

Obviously an American conspiracy to ban European planes in favor of home grown industry.

The new Boeings are every bit as big but don't get a mention

I shouldn't complain as I have Boeing stock and not EADS

I am sure the painted lines are painted for the various sizes of plane and so there are more factors at work here including the air traffic control instructions

The inquiry will be fun reading

or the runways and stuff were built way before planes were that big

What a disaster at Customs lines, baggage claim, taxi lines out front, etc., when one of those monsters lands and 500 katillion people deplane all at once, oof man!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

...and the chances of one of the passengers having chicken flu, cold, flesh eating ebola virus, must increase enormously and we know the cabin filters don't work coz we get sick every time we fly

ps air fares are through the roof (sorry for the pun south west). I go to england 3 times a year at about $900 round trip - it's all 1400 min from now as far as the eye can see

They say that female workers are not paid as much - so praps we need more female pilots

Stuff like this happens all the time. I remember flying into Bristol after they did their runway extension for larger planes. It was always a short landing. One year they changed the surface coating and planes were going off the runway.

Growing Pains

Same when they tried to land a Lockheed tri-star at Leeds Bradford on a new scheduled route to north america

It tipped off the end with its nose down and tail up

Not dignified

Trial and error stuff

By the way, I get what your saying about directions and women. They think very differently about driving. I'm helping my wife get a license (she never had a UK one as she never needed one) and I've found I must be careful how I describe things so that she is on the same page.

It isn't just driving, but driving reveals the differences nicely.

As a friend of mine says:

"Women do not have as many accidents as men - but they do see a lot"

I passed my UK car test in 1964 and my US car test in 2005 (Wisconsin)and my US motorbike bike test in 2007 (Florida) and I would hate to think I was doing the UK test again - those guys are tough !

I am assured that I can renew my UK license without taking a test when I go to home to dies in the elephant's graveyard, even though the license will be expired

US theory and road tests are an absolute doodle

eg 'If you are stopped at a red light and pedestrian start to cross in front of you - do you'

A blow your horn and pound on the dashboard

B drive at them to make them stop crossing

C wait until they have crossed before starting off

That was exactly one of the questions I was asked and the others were not much harder

Clutch control is 50% of the UK test so an auto is a doddle and as for parallel parking in a 60 foot space !

The UK test now has a digital hazard test which is pretty funny. You watch videos and start clicking the mouse when you see a hazard.
