Is I-94 still required to get SSN?

Hey,

Just came to the States on my K-1 and will soon be looking into getting a SSN. Checking the guide it says that I require an I-94. I filled out the I-94 and handed it in at the POE but was not given any part of this back, nor is it in my passport. My passport just has the stamp in it across the visa, and has 'K-1' written on it. At POE just as they were dealing with my packet all of their computers went down for about 30 minutes, so I'm not sure if this distracted the officer from their normal routine and they forgot to put the I-94 in my passport or what, but I didn't end up with it.

Should I have this I-94 or is it no longer required? I am from the UK if this makes any difference. Thanks.

My fiance and I went to get his SS card last week and they do want to see it attach inside your passport, where it should remain. You should have received it attached in your passport. I think you should call to check on this to confirm.

If it's not easy to return to your POE go to the closest CBP office and obtain the I-94.

+1 to Ahn Map.

You do need that I-94 for Adjustment of Status, as well as for a SSN and a driver license. It is, for the first 90 days, your only proof that you are in the US legally.

Fortunately, you can get it replaced at the CBP "Deferred Inspection" office at your nearest international airport.

Call them, explain the situation and make an appointment. When you go down bring your passport, boarding passes, and anything else they tell you to. They may try to charge you a couple hundred dollars to replace it. Stand your ground and don't pay, since this is their mistake and not yours.

Thanks for the advice everyone. So, am I correct in saying that I need to make an Infopass appointment with my local USCIS field office?

No, you need to go to the nearest international airport and obtain the I-94 from the CBP (Customs & Border Patrol) deferred inspection office.

Here's the Passenger Service Manager for IAH who might can tell you the closest place you can get it corrected. I know Houston didn't staple it in the passport at my husband's entry. Could you have stuffed it somewhere with your baggage claim or boarding pass stuff? It's very small.

Thanks Nich-Nick, we'll give them a call and see what they say. I definitely don't have it. The girl who dealt with me at Houston didn't know how to do a K-1 and had to ask her colleague. I think she just forgot to do it, or didn't know to do it. That and the computers going down, something was bound to go wrong. I just wish I had known and I would have checked for it, but I had no idea I needed anything back from them. Just presumed they knew what they were doing! I won't make that mistake again!!

hahaha...probably not since you won't be needing an I-94 after you get your greencard.

Thanks Lisa and Ian! I forgot to let you know how it went. I managed to get a replacement I-94 from my local airport as advised. I now have a SSN and am mid way through the AOS.
