W. TX becomes ever more lonely as population drops

reasonable range of a big city in west texas? is there such a thing?
Well, of course, one can drive all day and not see as much as a yaller dawg, no man.

I just found the list of the 20 largest Texas cities (2010 census). El Paso is #6 (pop. 649,121 -- +15.2% from 2000, but down from 5th place in 2000); Laredo is #10 (pop. 236,091 -- +33.7%, up from #13); and Lubbock (northwestern Texas) is #11 (pop. 229,573 -- +15.%, was #11). Trouble is, El Paso is SO divorced from the rest of the state that (I hear) it's closer to 5 other state capitals than it is to Austin. Lubbock = boring. I don't consider Laredo to be especially "western." Del Rio, conversely, is much smaller but very nice, and like Laredo with a sizable Mexican city across from it.

Some of the most staggeringly beautiful scenery in Texas is in the counties just west of #2 San Antonio (pop. 1,327,407; +16%; was #3). "Utopia, Texas" is aptly named.

Actually, given a choice, I'd dig living in Harlingen (pop. approx. 57,000), equidistant between #16 Brownsville (pop. 175,023; +25.3%; was #16) and #20 McAllen (pop. 129,877; +22%; was #23). The Mexican border towns are largely more fun to visit in the Rio Grande Valley than farther west, si man.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Amarillo and just north of it up in the panhandle is nice scenery wise.

Oh, very true. In 2003, I did a "getaway" trip up there -- flew into Amarillo; drove through Dalhart; overnighted in Clayton, NM; then drove the length of the Oklahoma panhandle because I'd always wanted to (got TWO speeding-tickets in less than an hour around Guymon, Okla. -- oof!); up to Liberal, KS; overnighted in Canadian, TX; then spent the day in Amarillo. Too bad Amarillo is so close to North Dakota; I couldn't deal with the winters, no man.
