My fiance' is coming to the USA. She has a Vietnamese driver's license. What is the procedure for getting a driver's license if you have a local (ie. Vietnamese) driver's license already (or does it make no difference)?

Thank you.

Helps with experience, however more than likely will have to do the learner's permit/road test thing. Driving a state privilege so varies by state as to requirements.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

Each state handles things differently. Check with the DMV.

The big thing may be with your insurance. Ask you agent/carrier now what may be needed to get her credit for driving experience there. You may need some sort of statement/proof from VN. In Mass it makes a huge ($1000.00) difference.

Checking with the DMV is good but if your fiance is coming on a K1 also check with the AAA. They have a publication called the 'Digest of Motor laws' that another visajourney member directed me to when I had difficulty with my foreign drivers license. I went into a AAA store and they let me photocopy the information from the book. I now carry evidence that I can drive legally here in my car.

Also check out the 'international drivers permit' to see if one may be required.

This document from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administratorst may also help: http://www.aamva.org/aamva/DocumentDisplay.aspx?id={E0CFB3C6-88F0-4FC3-959B-6BD1B9D5FF31}

This info from another visajourney member really helped me.

Good luck!

I don't think Vietnam Driver license has to do anything here in the States. She'll have to get her own driver lciense in the states.

I know for a fact that USA driver license works on serveral countries.

Unless she has the car indorsement on her Vietnamese DL it is useless. Some states will use foreign or other state's DL's but they always have to do a vision test at least. Most Vietnamese DL are only for motorbike under 175cc, which translates to a US motorcycle equivelent as most states require a DL for anything over 50cc. I would have the DL translated and make sure it is a certified translation, then go to your local DMV and ask them what else is needed, but if you are wanting her to drive a car, expect her to have to take a test since more than likely her DL is for a motorcycle only Jerome

Since ur fiancee is on K1, don't bother to go to DMV w/out a SSN. In my state, it's req'd.

Most states also require proof of lawful presence, as well. Many won't accept an I-94 that expires in 90 days.

With her VNese D/L, she can buy one of these and operate it legally right way:

Just remember, life over there in VN is NOT real! Your money will be worth a LOT less once you get back over here. Back to reality, cowboy!

Wow, is that including tax? hihiihihi

Anyway, for the insurance from AAA. My wife got some discount since she did purchased motobike insurance from Viet Nam, But, you need to show them the prove of insurance agency from VN.
