My Russian wife's 20 year-old son will soon (summertime) get his immigrant visa (if all goes as planned!) but he has a situation. First he will turn 21 on September 4th and the rules say he has to be in the USA BEFORE he turns 21. We are hopeful this can be done. His paperwork is with the NVC and I've sent in my AOS paperwork and paid the bill. And he has named me as agent...so hopefully we're on a schedule that will allow him to get here before Sept. 4. For reasons not important here, he wants to return to Russia after coming here for as little as two weeks. I seem to remember my wife got her green card pretty fast after she arrived.

Is it likely he might get his green card in two weeks or is that unrealistic? If he does not get it, can he return to Russia with his immigrant visa and later return to the USA? From what II've read here it looks like it. If he returns to Russia, how long can he stay before he must return to the USA? Can he get back in the USA without his green card in hand?

Thanks!

Once entering the USA, the passport will be endorsed at the POE as a Green-card. The Visa has a notation that says the visa will serve as I-551 for 1 year upon enforcement.

This means has green card status the moment they leave the POE. Actual card arrives a few weeks later, but the visa in passport will serve as a green-card until then.

Can travel, and the Visa with POE endorsement will allow travel, and work.
