I am working whilst posting Alan, but thank you for your concern. This is the 21st century after all, computers are capable of performing multiple tasks simultaneously.

It wasn't intended as an insult Alan, you called me a troll, and I don't think you actually know what an internet troll is, or what it entails. You may have some vague notion what you think it is, but I think quite possibly that your advanced age might preclude you from keeping up to date on some internet phenomena.

I have to ask Alan, why is it that 90% of your posts on here are you simply whingeing about various cultural deviances in the U.S. that irritate you? Are you simply a malcontent, or are you really that miserable here? You might want to utilize the knowledgebase here to try to rectify that situation.

I didn't know you were so interested in me and that you followed all my posts. I hope it isn't an erotic attraction.

Now why don't you get off my case and go and stalk someone else ?

I am not at all miserable in my situation. I work at the same time as I post (like you) and I have made 175k in the last 6 months (after tax). I have my 2 passports and can live anywhere from Hawaii to Crete with no more paperwork required. If I change my location in the future it won't be in response to suggestions by the likes of you.

You still haven't attempted to address the thread, and instead, you seem to have an unhealthy fascination with me. Perhaps you want to be me when you grow up ?

Well it seems quite easy to surmise that you aren't as miserable here in the U.S. as your posts would suggest. Maybe, you could stop whining so much about the U.S., or use your passports to go somewhere that doesn't seem to irritate you so much. Why on earth would I want to grow up to be like you? I enjoy life, not complaining about the minutia of it.

Aspects of the US would still annoy me whether I was here or not. The same goes for the UK/France/Germany/Australia/NZ etc

All the things that annoy me about the US do not affect me personally as I get my information from the BBC, my cars from Germany or Japan, my financial services from the US, my HP sauce and Branston Pickle from England and previously, my women where I find them.

I don't have kids to put through college and I have top quality health care that my wife provides for free. I live in a State with no income tax. So all this stuff that I am concerned about is on behalf of the less fortunate and it isn't anything that affects me directly as I am 'fire proof'.

Rather than pull up the ladder and say 'I'm alright Jack', I engage with the things that are wrong. If I lament education standards or trash reporting, it's on behalf of the victims - not as it affects me.

A social liberal in the style of Warren Buffet but without the financial generosity

No point trying to change the things that are right is there ?

I could start a thread saying 'isn't it wonderful that the summer is coming and don't the flowers look nice' but I feel that wouldn't stretch minds.

There are plenty of those threads that would fit nicely with your 'hear no evil, see no evil' philosophy - but you wouldnt find them as much fun I reckon

First I saw all that American derision of Paul McCartney for not having prenuptial agreement

Now the TV and web is full of Americans discussion on whether William will have a prenup

Isn't it time someone told America that Prenups are not legal in England and things are different over there in the wide world.

I first met this thinking when my American wife asked me if there was a public holiday in the UK on July 4th

Americans really do think that the whole world has to fall in line with them and they set the standard in everything

If you don't believe me, google 'royal prenup'

ps there is no such thing as U.K. law. There is the 'law of England and Wales' and the 'law of Scotland'

Hehe, we don't have prenups here in Canada either. Ya.....

We love your threads though Alan. Where else can you get such a slice of veiled love/hate for the US?

.....and they have fish and chip shops that sell mushy peas - in Victoria at least

the Avatar is from the film 'Quemada' (simplified to 'BURN' for the US market)

Brando said it was his finest acting in any film - and it is my favorite

His speech therein comparing the choice between a 'wife or a prostitute' to a 'slave or a paid worker', is a classic.

For instance when I explained that in an English pub you should always add 'please' when ordering a drink, she said 'Hell I am doing them a favor coming in here, why should I say please ?'

Don't get me started about drinking in English pubs have spent a few hours in them.. Speaking of classless Have been to any good matches lately ??? I will give you thing Americans don't have a clue about the real world... Mostly because 90% have never owned a passport

The culture differences are too may to note and are an expression of deep seated capitalist versus socialist ideas so that isn’t really my point - I am more pointing out that the US media, whether they know that there is no such thing as an English prenup, will never make an effort to explain that. In other word the media are all about entertainment and making things up, rather than informing and educating and enlightening the public

“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”

That is the defining characteristic of the USA - that there is Nothing beatween love and hate. No grey areas. Nobody says "I quite like XYZ" or "I am not keen on XYZ".

It's either "I absolutely hate that" - and I want to shoot it, crush it and throw a phosphorus grenade at it at it - OR I love it and I want to scream with approval and howl like a wolf

I don't hate the USA or love it either - any more than I do any country including England.

I save those love emotions for special situations - I can love people or animals or a special place. I reserve 'hate' and I don't have any. If I ever have any, the world will know.

People say they love the USA. I say do you mean the Haitians in Florida - NO. The released Cuban jailbirds in Miami - NO. The Muslims in Minnesota - NO. The Jews in New York - No. The Congress people - No. Senators - No. The President - No. The climate - hardly. So what do they love ? This isn't the only country that votes or has free speech or laws or a judicial system. Do they love the IRS ? Do they love health insurance companies ? Break the US down to its component parts and populations and ask people whether they like these things one by one and they say NO. Yet somehow they love the whole.

That's like saying I hate rain but I like thunderstorms

When it comes right down to it they are in love with an idea. God is an idea too. It's an emotion that is as ethereal as religion.

I pay pay taxes to the penny and go out of my way to declare income that I could get away with. I don't break laws and I help my neighbours. If I knew a criminal or a terrorist I would denounce them to the law. I am willing to do jury service. That makes me a good citizen but if anyone wants any more then they are selling something I don't understand and I am not buying.

The people who want to leave poor Americans in the gutter and shoot abortion doctors and excuse soldiers who act in a criminal way are the real America haters and the word 'hate' should be reserved for them.

I am repulsed by the word 'hate'. If America was composed of people who do what I do and don't do what I don't, it would be more lovable than it is - even to someone who is in love with it now.

Wow, this was so nice to read. I think I will begin to stalk to you too, Alan the Red

All stalkers welcome.

I used to feel badly beaten down by all the intimidating flag and guns and god people - but now I know the country better and I know they are just a vocal minority who lay claim the country's soul when there are many people who are 'just people' and don't have extreme ideas, hating France and China and all that silly stuff, and are actually in the majority here. Hence Obama 2008.

It's a fact that many countries had free speech and jury trials and votes for women and banned slavery and child labour - all a long, long time before the USA. Yet many extreme right wingers think it was all invented here and the rest of the world is deprived and inferior and has no liberty or freedom People at my gun club think the queen actually rules England and look bemused when I tell em it's just a tourist attraction to grab their dollars.

So on balance, once I realised who the real majority were, I was able to be quite content living here and I lost my fear of the right wing nasties and the extreme religious people. I saw a program on Walmart where the employees had to stand up and point to their hearts and shout "I love Walmart" and hoot and howl. Then they had to come to work every morning and sing the company song before they started work. Pretty North Korean in my book. I am quite assimilated, but I will never be comfortable with these aspects of the culture.

So stangely enough, the main thing that is unloveable about the USA are the attitudes and beliefs of they who claim to love it the most but in reality don't - and the most loveable are the ordinary majority who don't require compulsory lip service like the extremist and rabid and loud minority

When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag carrying a cross" - Robert Sinclair, 1835

I don't think it's uncommon at all for Americans to believe that American norms are world norms - or at least should be

For instance when I explained that in an English pub you should always add 'please' when ordering a drink, she said 'Hell I am doing them a favor coming in here, why should I say please ?'

I've been in many an English pub - countless even, and you tell me that it's commonplace to say 'please' on a Friday night

Try reading the thread first and don't give in to your prejudices

How about not giving in to yours? Lead by example ;)

Since when did you speak for 'everyone'. You speak only for yourself so don't kid yourself.

Yet, your limited knowledge on all things American gives you authority to speak for all of us? Interesting.

The underclass are in the majority in the UK and the USA. A visit to the mall or Walmart confirms that. Vast numbers of the underclass have hungry children and they are involved in drugs and crazy drinking. If they read a paper in England, it will be the SUN

I have seen many SUN readers and many of those were semi literate at best and just looked at the nudes.

The ones who had some reading ability read about alien abductions, flesh eating viruses etc

Anyone who takes their legal advice from the pages of the SUN is bound to come a cropper

However, the BBC is available and gives an educated and informed opinion on most matters and luckily it is available online. A rare resource.

How about before bashing Americans for being too ignorant to not know English law, you first start by bashing the English ones who don't know their own?
