Iran's hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Tuesday for a purge of liberal and secular teachers from the country's universities, urging students to return to 1980s-style radicalism.

"Today, students should shout at the president and ask why liberal and secular university lecturers are present in the universities," the official Islamic Republic News Agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying during a meeting with a group of students.

[...]

Iran retired dozens of liberal university professors and teachers earlier this year. And last November, Ahmadinejad's administration for the first time named a cleric to head the country's oldest institution of higher education, Tehran University, despite protests by students.

A man of 'action' apparently. Sounds like he's prepared to do what a lot of people here are simply content to 'talk about' in the US - blaming college professors for everything that is wrong with the country.

That was my thought. It's not like purging liberals from university is an exclusively Iranian desire. To the contrary, there's a bunch of people in this country who would like to do the same and try everything to get their desires fulfillled, from the student bill of rights (also known as the students' wish to not learn about other perspectives) to the denunciation of American professors as communist-sympathizers (take a look at Peace Studies to see conrete examples) and supporters of the enemy.

Rather than pointing the finger again at Iran (even if it is justified), we should be more concerned with similar things happening in this nation. But then the reason we are constantly fed news on Iran is so that we forget about the the fact that the same thing is increasingly happening here.

 Reminds me of the thread discussing fewer "born-again" university students post-graduation.

Me, too. But I'm also reminded of the flood of news about what is going on in Iraq in 2002 particularly which set the stage for the war.

I mean honestly why would I care more about Iran than this country? Yet hardly any news on the attempts to intimitate and silence professors in the US makes it into newsfeeds.

Not too sound cynical but it makes you wonder why every time Iran in its grandiose self-deportment fails to follow the security council guidelines we get soundbites telling us about how bad Iran really is and how much people suffer. Does anyone believe that up to today free-thinking Iranis were allowed to teach in the first place? If that were the case then doesn't that make Iran a free country up to today?
