Because the days of actually knowing anything seem to be over. Just google it or use wikipedia and you must be right. Even though nothing in wiki is fact checked. It is like supporting one forum post with another forum post. Lazy.

I have been teaching the boys what I and Alla consider valuable life skills, how to fix things in the house, build things etc. They, of course, say "I can watch a video about this on the internet" I give up.

Reminds me of Benjamin and "Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction"... it's the same way with everything nowadays. Before, you'd go see a play. And then people started going to the movies. Then movies would be repeated on tv occasionally. Then we had VCRs. Then netflix. And now you can download whatever you want, whenever you want and have it within an hour. "Specialness" and closeness is lost at the cost of immediate gratification.

Wikipedia is actually thoroughly patrolled by legions of wikipedia freaks who expect everything to be cited, etc. So it's not a bad as a source as people make it seem, although I still wouldn't use it as an academic resource.

Pretty soon we won't even need colleges or anything.

Or maps or compasses.

Hey, my kids need someone to work for them. My guess is the guy that makes all the money from wiki went to college.

What's wrong with the stuff that makes your life easier?

Google, GPS etc. what's wrong with all those things? People can do something faster and can focus on different stuff.

But, OK, if you think that people are becoming more and more lazy... then let's stop using electricity, stop shopping, make clothes for ourselves, get water from rivers and live in a cave.

No it won't. Their wives are on record with their willingness to feed Gary and Slim to the first bear (or presumably the first radioactive monster) that threatens

As long as Alla can run faster than me, she is safe from all bears and radioactive monsters. I think she carries a bottle of honey when we go walking in the mountains. If she sees a bear, she will squirt me with the honey and RUN!

Nothing, I use them all the time. The mistake is in thinking wikipedia is one of "those things" Knowledge is one of those things because it goes with you everywhere. Wikipedia is for people that have no other source of knowledge on the subject and don't know where to find it or do not want to stand up from their computer chair and detach themselves from the "glass #######" unless necessary. A failure of communication really. We used to sit around and talk with others in the same room and people stated what was on their mind. You could call BS if you wanted and offer your information in rebuttal. It was interesting and entertaining. Now some people expect if you say anything there has to be some "link" so everyone you are talking to is able to check it out without standing up from THEIR glass #######.

For example, I lived in Ukraine and have a Ukrainian wife. If someone asks me about a Ukrainian tradition or holiday, I am very unlikely to cite wikipedia as my source. Would you? If, on the other hand, I had no knowledge of Ukraine, had never been there and didn't know anyone from there, I would be very unlikely to discuss traditions, etc., simply because I read something in wikipedia.

Basica;;y, if you know about it you do not need wikipedia and if you don't, you could always discuss something else. It is a solution to a problem that never existed.

I think it's important for people to realize that Wikipedia isn't a "source" in the manner that primary sources are. In fact, it comes as a big shock to a lot of university students when they're dinged for using Wikipedia in their source notes, just like you can't cite articles from a paper encyclopedia. It can't replace actual scholarly information, but for what it does, Wikipedia is revolutionary. It's information at your fingertips that has been shown to be as accurate, and in some cases more accurate, than Brittanica.

For example, I heard an interview the other day with the guy who wrote First Clash, a book about the battle at Marathon where the outnumbered Athenians beat the Persian army. It piqued my curiosity, so I wandered over to Wikipedia to read about the battle of Marathon. Great article, and by the time I was done following all the various links, I felt like I had a decent layman's understanding of the subject. I could of gone to a library or taken a university class, but my interest may have passed by then, I may not have found the time, or I may have just forgotten. The great thing about Wikipedia is that it's right there. And it's rarely going to be wrong, because it has an entire planet of experts who are going to be right there to correct an erroneous entry.

I see Visa Journey as kind of the same thing for marriage/family immigration. We have a ton of topics that affect us, and there are a ton of contributors. Sometimes we get something wrong, the community is able to self-correct, and everyone benefits because of it. We could each have gone to a library or delved through a law library to figure out all the ins and outs, but what a chore. Like Wikipedia, Visa Journey is a non-authoritative site that manages to be authoritative enough in practice to get the job done.

OK. But in my academic writing I have to cite the source if I ever use an idea, which is not mine.

And when I'm talking to somebody it's "Fine if you don't believe me, you can read this book or watch that documentary". Otherwise... well, a person can make up anything, so sometimes you need some evidence to prove your point.

It's not like wiki is a great evidence, but it's good for fun.

In academic writing you need to because they require it (I know, I proofread ALL of Alla's writing) There is no other reason. I make a good living giving advice and generally overseeing things for which I am paid very well. I do not cite sources. They came to me, I AM the source. If they do not believe me, they can stop using my services.

My feelings about general conversation and things such as posting (for fun) is that you can believe me or not, I really do not care if you want to be wrong and I am not going to do anything to spoil the fun. To each their own. I am a firm and solid believer in that if your opponent, in theory, conversation, whatever, is wrong...let them be wrong. If someone wants to prove me wrong, the burden of proof is on them. I feel no need to prove myself right. Maybe because I am older? I don't know. But I am really not going to be troubled with nonsense, I have enough real issues to deal with.

With me it is "Fine if you don't believe me...have a nice day, I will."

Only if it's a "him or me" scenario. If it's a "there's a bear" scenario, my wife would probably shoot the bear and then cook it up.

I can outrun my wife.

That is because you are a very clever person. Clever? what does that have to do with running.you ask?

You figured out you should marry an FSU woman long before you were too old to run fast.

All a matter of perception though, isn't it. Was that shark really going to eat her?
