is this based on a belief that men lack the ability to control their "fitnah" or is it more of not giving them the option of committing that sin?

I'm sorry first of all because I didn't realize to whom I was replying at first so I was answering from one muslim to another, assuming that Henia (who I thought you were at first) would understand the Arabic terms. My bad (F)

To answer the question above... maybe a little of both :P

It's my belief that it is not only the men's responsibility to resist such temptaion but also the women in society hold the responsibility to not flaunt temptation in front of them as well. I hope that makes sense.

I didn't know a hospital was a religious place

It's not, but if the current gowns keep some Muslim women from getting the care they need, isn't it worth it?

I guess so. I just don't see many other religious groups not going to the hospital because of their religious views. Other than those who believe that God will miraculously heal them, of course.

I suppose that would be an interesting thing to find out. How many Muslim women really do avoid going to the hospital for this reason? And what do gowns look like in hospitals in countries that follow Islam strictly, like Saudi Arabia?

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Makes perfect sense, thanks for explaining! It's one of those things that I had always wondered about but never asked. So I'm glad to now at least in part understand the covering up. I think it's interesting how different women cover up to different extents, some covering all but the face, some all but the eyes, and some covering everything...

And hey-I learned some new Arabic terms today so it's all good!

That is a very good idea. I guess I'm just not used to having religious beliefs dictate how I take care of myself, or who takes care of my medical issues. My apologies if I have offended anyone.

I think it's that to a Muslim woman, whose religious belief system forms her everyday life, right down to what she wears, it's probably a big deal to her to not be able to wear all the coverings that she feels necessary to protect the men in her life and community (based on VP's explanation of the reasoning behind it). I guess then where do you draw the line and say, sorry men, you're just going to have to deal with seeing my face/whatever body part is exposed; so that I can get the care that I need?

In fairness, you wouldn't have to wear this gown. You can wear the traditional one if you want. I believe this gown is being offered as an option.

yes, of course. but my comment was regarding people's religious beliefs keeping them from going to the hospital. In the end, though, if this idea saves lives, i'm for it

And how much will this option be costing an already burdened NHS?

i don't see what theproblem would be providing this garment as an option. if the medics find that it does notimpede the work they have to do, i suppose it is fine.

I do not know from first hand experience but from what I've heard in Saudi men are not allowed in the women's rooms or in that area (unless it's family or the doctor). The nurses there wear hijab and niqab and if a man is coming to your room for any reason you're made aware in plenty of time to "gather" yourself.
