White House: Five years after the September 11 attacks, the United States is safer

Reuters comes up with this story about a 23 page report from the White House but provides no link...great journalism...sigh. I'd like to know what specific things are in this report based or is it just something the White House 'feels good' about?

Five years after the September 11 attacks, the United States is safer but "we are not yet safe" from a significantly degraded yet still dangerous al Qaeda threat, the White House said in a report on Tuesday.

A "national strategy for combating terrorism" came as the United States marks soon the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks and the Bush administration tries to persuade Americans weary of the Iraq war to return Republicans to control of the U.S. Congress in November elections.

"Since the September 11 attacks, America is safer, but we are not yet safe," the 23-page report concluded.

Wouldn't a report worth it's weight give specifics instead of just telling us we're safer? #######? I'd like to actually read this report is anyone here can find it.

I just read it and am unimpressed. Is there anything in that report that is actually new? This sounds like a rehash of everything we've been hearing since 01.

Well not exactly. There is substance. They do mention some of the successes we've had. They also mention some of the new challenges we now face that we didn't face before. How they can go from that to saying we're "safer" is a mystery to me. If anything, it is clear from the report that the nature of the enemy has changed in response to the actions of this Administration. That does not mean the enemy is any less of a threat. It's just a different kind of threat.

When will we ever be "safe"? In 2001 even with four planes purposefully crashed, it was still safer to fly than to drive the 20 miles to the airport.

It's probably part of the propaganda effort to remind people that we're supposed to be grateful but live in fear.

But as long as our ports are almost free from security screenings, our chemical and nuclear plants are not protected, and our food supply is centralized, we will not be safe. Actually we're much less safe in these regards. And I'd be surprised if the report spent any significant time discussing these gaping holes...
