It's largely based on credit rating & history. Since your SSN is fairly new, more than likely they'll require a deposit. Unless of course you opt for pre-paid cell phones or apply using fiance(e)/spouse credit info. However, obtaining the plan in your name is a good start towards establishing a positive credit rating/history for yourself by making timely payments.

Hope this helps :innocent:

I agree and can tell you that from personal experience. When I first obtained a SSN I didn't want to have a cell phone plan and decided to go prepaid. But after a while I changed my mind and went to a Verizon store to sign up for their cheapest plan at the time (that was in 2001) they ran my credit which I explained won't show much since I just obtained a SSN and haven't been in the US for a little more then a year. They approved me with the condition to pay a $500 deposit which was waaaaay to much and I didn't sing up for it.

Right now I still don't have a contract but am quite pleased with my monthly flatrate plan, having unlimited minutes and messages.

So there's always something like MetroPCS, Boost, Straight talk (at walmart) Net10 and even places like sprint now offer a non contract cell service ranging anywhere from $40 - $65 a month.....

With new SSN you will have no credit history they will want a huge deposit. But, With tmobile you can buy cell phones yourself (used or new) And have an off contract plan . I think they go much easier on your credit. But, it depends on where you live if they have good service or not.

I have never seen or heard of a cell phone plan that reports to a credit bureau unless you default, so a plan will not help with your general credit rating but will most likely make it easier to renew your plan without the deposit with the same carrier.

Why the need for a plan, when there are many cell phone providers who offer great great programs without being tied to a 2 year contract.

They dont report to credit reporting agency unless you default on payments, but if you want to sign up for a contract, then they do run a credit check to look for 2 things, if you have any past bills due with any cellphone company.

2nd - They check how is the overall payment history of the person.

Depends on which one you referring to, most the great plans with great phones are on contract. You are required to sign a year or two contract in order the get the phone for cheap.

If that is your goal to get a cheap phone, then yes sign up for a Plan. You can get the same service and programs without signing on a contract.

If you can get by with a simple cell phone that just does voice calls and text messages, there are many prepaid options. Both Net10 and Tracfone (same company) are good choices. Net10 for modest use ($15 a month for 150 minutes), or Tracfone for very little use ($7 a month for maybe about 40 minutes if you buy one of their "double minutes for life" phones). I've used both, bought them for other people, and still pay for a Tracfone for Mom because she never uses it. There are other options too that I am less familiar with.

If you want 3G and a fancy Android or iPhone, or must have very heavy voice/text usage, then you'll probably need a contract. It depends on what your needs are.

Yep exactly do you want to pay $400 for iphone?

I am sure 90 or 45 would sound much cheaper for which you have to sign a 2 yr contract.

Why dont you get added yourself on the plan that your spouse has. That should be much easier and quicker.
