It was spring break week, so the DMV place was packed. I'm over them taking her ID. It's not a big deal her not buying beer. She has her green card, her SS card and her Thai ID (which by the way has a smart chip in it and looks more secure than any ID or drivers license I have seen here in the US)

They don't give her any issues having a beer at a restaurant.

I just want her to pass the written driving test and I'll go from there.

The whole thing just seemed like 2 different state agencies contradicting themselves, which is quite annoying.

Certain establishments take the TABC very seriously. Be it a bar, restaurant, and liquor stores. This is why most establishments (not all do) require their employees to get individually certified. It puts the burden on the back of the employee versus the establishment when the employee is certified. The establishment can still get warned mind you, but the employee ends up being the one who gets the fine/possible jail time if caught by a TABC agent.

We might have 'lax' ways you can buy alcohol, but our liquor taxes are high and the enforcement of the law is strong.

It sucks what happened to you and as I said, I would have contacted an attorney, because they had no justification for taking her ID in that situation and that is not a normal/common practice.

I would agree with that since both of these guys were obviously here from somewhere on some visa from south asia. That said, TABC should accept a green card as ID, and train them that way. Take your Texas DL and compare it your SOs green card. Look at that big black strip on the back of the green card. Not only that, look what she/he went through to get it.

The green card, (and even my wife's Thai ID card) have much more security features than a Texas DL or ID card.

It's a Texas thing... I get it.. It's just ignorant.

If you were a bank teller, which one would consider a better form of ID? A Texas ID or a green card?

You do know the three things it takes to be considered a "legal Texan" don't you ?

Every Texan is required to answer three questions, if they get two out of three correct...their a "Texan".

1) How much beer is in a 6 pk. ?

2) What color is an orange ?

3) What's your daddy's name ?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

the more i think about this the more odd it sounds to me. these were national chain retailers. you'd think there would be a corporate policy regarding acceptable forms of id. i'd be more understanding if they were mom & pop convenience stores w/ the clerk making the call. who did you send that letter to? the companies or to some agency in texas?

We have a saying here in Alaska...it goes like this..; "The best site you can see in Alaska is a Okie heading south with a Texan under each arm".

Yeah the agency in Texas in TABC. I sent the state agency an email with the dates, times, addresses etc. After tomorrow, I probably wont be able to buy a beer in this state. The company will hide behind Texas law, which is what they did on both occasions.

Like I said previously when I went in the store from the gas pump, they refused to sell it to me also. That really pi$$ed me off.

you also have to remember which one is seen each and every single day.

That makes a very big difference. Especially if you're away from any 'tourist' areas.

Still doesn't excuse it if a green card is an accepted form of ID. Splitting hairs now. Set a policy and follow it, or don't.

what's 'acceptable' and what people will take are two different things sometimes.

We're not talking about you walking into a federal agency or a state agency here presenting your ID.

We're talking about a place of business. They can choose to accept whatever form or ID they wish to or not wish to. I know plenty of places who won't accept out of state IDs even.

Sure, it sounds good to you and you know it's legit, but not everyone sees a green card every day. They aren't handed out like candy.
