Now that Bush has popularised the term, "Islamic fascists" and BBC2's Newsnight has started running debates about whether the recent airline plot and the war in lebanon should mean that "Western Liberal types" should get off the fence and offer Blair and Bush their unstinting support, I just wonder how simplified, polarised, "with us or against us", things are going to become.

There are already comparisons with McCarthyism in the way in which people are written off as "liberal" whether they are or not (which these days might as well read "communist") for criticising government policy. Makes you wonder if something worse is in the offing...

If you support a war without clearly defined goals, as well as domestic legislative changes which are potentially at odds with the constitution (for example) - then technically speaking, you would be a liberal.
