House Republicans defy Obama veto threat, pass stopgap bill to avoid shutdown for a week

Government shutdown is avoided for at least one more week, like previous threats of a shutdown.

it's not that simple. the senate has to approve and Obama has to sign.

This is pure proof that Dems don't give a damn about the people or saving money.

"But Obama calls the measure a distraction from negotiations on a full-year spending bill and has promised he would veto it. It's unlikely to ever reach him. The partisan House vote sent the measure to the Democratic Senate, where Democrats say they will let it perish. "

they are both to blame in this mess, screw both parties.

are government employees "more special" than all the other private sector employees who have been permanently furloughed from their job during the past 2 years?

at least your furlough will be a temporary short term thing.

Wow, it's not that government workers are any more special than anyone else. I work with thousands of educators across the US who have been receiving pink slips for the past 2 years. The government funded program that I manage has helped keep a small fraction of those educators in a job for the next 4 years. If I'm not at my post doing my job and ensuring that taxpayer money is used correctly... many of those workers might receive pink slips again this year. I don't want that at all... I want to keep those folks working just like I want to keep myself working.

It's frustrating for us within the government who come in every day, do our jobs, realize the importance of helping communities across this country and have a genuine commitment to doing our job... and then not being allowed to do our jobs just because congress can't get over a ideological differences.

We're not special, but most of us want to continue working for the American people, that's what public service is all about. Others choose to follow money in the private sector or do good in the non-profit sector, many of us choose to serve our nation in the civil service or armed forces. No matter what your career choice, if you have a job... you should be allowed to come to work and do it.

I have a mortgage and financial obligations just like anyone else... we're not special, we are still human though.

My heart goes out to those in the midst of the K-1 process. I hope all your consulates quickly recover from any backlog created by a government shutdown. I know from experience that with the consulate me and my husband dealt with, our very routine and unexceptional case took almost a year for the consulate to handle (not including any kind of processing with USCIS or NVC), and that was without any kind of extenuating circumstances. I shudder to think of what loved ones will go through while they are working for a visa in current times, especially if they are dealing with that particular consulate.

Keep hope. Our philosophy was to always prepare ourselves for the worst, but still keep hope that you'll get past this point eventually and be together. And in the end, we did arrive at that point.

Well now that we know who the "non-essential" government workers are, can we get rid of them once and for all?

How about every member of the military fighting in wars that are not essential to our security?

Iraq, Afghanistan (today), Libya.

Or stationed in places where the Soviet Union no longer poses a threat?

Germany.

Hell, we could be repositioning them to actually defend the homeland by putting them on the border. But we wouldn't need that many. The rest are non essential or should be.

technically outside of a time of war, we aren't supposed to have a standing army...

I agree. The Soviet Union (aka Putin's Russia), Iran, Libya, etc. are a much bigger threat to Europe than they are to America. Let Europe deal with them, we know how good they are.

So then technically the whole damn thing is non-essential.

yet it's the one thing tha they can actually spend money on/go into debt for as well... not all these agencies, social programs, etc...

well thats annoying as VSC could approve me this week as expedite approved, it will then be sent to NVC, and there will be no-one there to get the mail, to process or anything. I hope this doesnt happen, or if it does, it lasts a few days.

I'm in the same boat. I was expecting NO2 this week or the next. I don't want to be in limbo after waiting so long!

The crazy thing is that they're arguing over like 2% of the actual budget. Neither party has the balls to really do anything about 75% of the budget because its defence,Medicaid and social security. It really pisses me off what blowhards some politicians are about $1 million here or $2 million there when they could be talking about $10 billion here $50 billion there. ..
