I have a question about SSN. SSN page advices to wait for 2 weeks after arrival before going to SSN office to apply for social security in case of K1. Is this still valid? Does it still take 2 weeks? I just wanted to do immediately so we could apply for driver's license.

Yes, two weeks is about the norm. Moving from the Canada forum to the SSN section.

Can you apply for marriage the same day you apply for SSN or you have to wait until you receive the card in mail? Ho long does it usually take?

Don't need SSN to get a marriage license.

SSA suggests that individuals that have entered the United States with non-immigrant status wait at least 10 calendar days before submitting a Social Security number (SSN) application to allow the Department of Homeland Security time to record entry into their database, but individuals are not required to wait 10 days before applying.

Thank you! Thus, if I want to submit the AOS ASAP, I can actually go and get married officially before SSN arrives, right? In fact, it may be easier to get married immediately and file for SSN with new name, right?

Yes, you can get married immediately. Depending on the workers at your local SS office you may be able to apply for your wife's card in her new name. Be sure you do it before, I think, 76 days have passed since her I-94 was issued. After that they will not issue or make changes to her card until she has an EAD or green card.

You don't need a SSN for a license or for AOS. I applied for it before the wedding and then just plan to go back to have it changed to my married name and remove restrictions once I get my GC

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Thank you! Did you apply for AOS with your married name or with the maiden name?

Apply for it in the name she wants to use. If she will use your last name then apply for it with your last name.

It depends on your state DMV as to whether you need a SSN to apply for a license. In Indiana you need one. Check your state's requirements.

The question was about a marriage license, not drivers license....

I applied to it with my maiden name because that is what's on the i-94, passport and BC, and because i wasn't married yet when I applied. thats what i was told. they told me to come back with my GC so that I can change the name and remove the restrictions on it :) the number won't change. :)

It was our experience that you should wait at least (14) “business” days before applying for a SS card. The reason being is that the SS office gets its info from USCIS, and it takes the USCIS at least (14) business days to process the information into the SAVE database. The SS office cannot actually see the information in the SAVE database, but it will allow the SS office to check the name given on the I-94 after the lapsed (14) business day time period. Regarding the marriage license, our state did not require us to have a SSN number to get a license. In fact, it worked out to our advantage that our SSN did not get processed before the (14) business days. When we went to follow-up on my (fiancée at the time) wife’s SS card it did not get processed, because we were not in the SAVE database as of yet. However, we got married, and then brought a certified marriage license with us to the SSN office and they processed the card with her married name.
