Importing my Vehicle

On Friday I went to the bank and paid off my vehicle.

On Sunday I entered the tunnel to USA through Windsor, ON.

I told the CBP that I wanted to import my vehicle, he walked me to secondary. There they told me to take my papers and go inside. I handed them the ownership and a letter from Honda Canada that said all recalls had been made and it complied with the USA standards. I had to fill out one form which was simple, they stamped it and gave me back two copies, one to always leave in the vehicle, the second I take to the Secretary of State after I get the title letter. All in all a very simple process.

I've been told by many on this forum as well on paperwork that you should not have to pay duty on your car if you're coming from Canada. My husband and I were up to Quebec this weekend for the Sugar Shack and stopped in to import his car on the way back. We ended up having to pay $225 in Duty fees. They valued his car at $10,000 and it was 3% on the first $1000 and then 2.5% on each $1000 after. I asked about waiving it because he immigrated but he said they don't do that.

No idea if we got screwed out of $225 or not, but I'm happy it's over and done with.

Free for me, they didn't even ask to see if it was paid off or not. I had the papers ready, but they never asked.

Not charged any duty on my car when I imported, there are state taxes tho when you register your car for the first time in the state.

I got my NY state license, plates, and vehicle registration done this weekend. I had to bring my importing papers from customs but never paid state taxes on it, nor did I pay duty on my car but a customs officer on my POE was VERY kind to me and stamped my papers without making pay 2.5% on it.

Look to see if you state has tax exemption forms as you already paid taxes on it in Canada. I also brought my sales receipt to prove the amount that I paid but they didn't need to see it. The only things I paid was standard fees for registering and such.

We live in New Hampshire, so there is no State tax. We'll have to pay property tax on the car, but that's different. Looks like we got screwed. Oh well, it's over and done with. -.-

We have two car to import. We are thinking to complete POE landing in May with one car and come back so we can finally move in July.

Do we need both the car at border for import paper work?

You must import both cars at the border with the proper compliance letters. If not you cannot register or sell your cars in the USA.

You can get the compliance letter for 1 of them and import it first then at a later date request the compliance letter for the other and import that one at a later time.

I start working on compliance and recall letter for both the cars. It seems like both the car must be physically present at border for import paper work. US officer can not process paperwork without car as we are planning to complete landing only in one car.

1. Formal job offer letter signed by you and your employer.
