Congrats!

If the name isn't going to change, you can leave it as it is. The GC is the DHS work authorization.

Congrats on the approval!!! :)

I waited for the actual green card to arrive in the mail and then went to the social security office and applied for removal of that imprint for them to sent me a card without it.

Yes, the green card is the authorization, but if you apply for a job and someone wants to see your social security card, why not having one that is without the restriction, that way you don't have to bring your green card along, explain that you are a permanent resident etc. ......sooo if you have some time to spare, go to the office, pull a number and wait your turn at the social security office like I did :)

It's up to you. Some people have it changed, some do not.

Basically, if you are applying for a new job, you need to fill out an I-9 form. For it, you have to show who you are and that you are allowed to work. There are 3 lists of permitted documents to satisfy this. In case of a LPR (which your wife is), this can be:

1) Driver license and unrestricted SS card, or

2) Green Card.

So if your wife does not want to show her Green Card when applying for a new job, she should get a new, unrestricted SS card. If she does not mind to show her Green Card, then she won't have to show her SS card again for a very long time. I did not change my SS card until I became a US citizen and only then because I also changed my name at the same time. Other than for employment, the SS card is never shown again. All that's needed is the number and that never changes.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

You do not HAVE to remove it. SS cards are not valid for employment anyway, not even for citizens, without something else. You will be solving a problem that does not exist.

Alla never changed hers and has never been asked for her SS card for any reason. It is safely tucked away in a drawer. You show your green card for proof of employment eligibility.
