Sian speaks pretty acceptable English. You know how those limeys are, though....adding extra "u"s to words, using words and phrases that mean entirely different things here in the states, etc. I'll have her dumbed down to American English pretty soon, I reckon.

Yeah, "smoking a **" is a saying that springs to mind which has a TOTALLY different meaning in the UK to the one in the USA.

And yup, damn aull us Brits four stiucking iun thouse daumn "u's". :D

:luv: Just curious~ Sometimes I feel shy and embarrassed when I talk to his families. I am afraid that I cant think out the right word to express my thinking or suddenly I cant understand what they talk about and cant do the right reaction. It's really my big problem.

I have no problem at all when I talk to my future husband.

Especially there are some topics about the culture issue, I cant handle it at all....All I can do is SMILE~~

Somebody have the same experience?

My wife Chona (from the Phillipines) kind of freezes up too with my mom on the phone. ...But Chona writes perfect English! She does better than my father does about that. Try to connect in thought with your to-be new mother-in-law. That will help. Remember that in any language - one must think like the people you are talking to - that is, as in Amerika, one must try to think like an American so the words will form the correct order in sentences. It is the same when one lives in Germany and tries to speak German. It takes practice.

Remember one thing above all, EVERY American came from an immigrant! So relax a little and it will come easier for you. Just try to get the feeling that your husband to-be is the one you are talking to and then speak - it will make it easier for you to feel not so nervous.

Anghel speaks very good english now. When we first met he had some problems with pronounciation & things but he has improved greatly. I LOVE his accent though, especially when he says my name. :D I was very surprised the first time I spoke with his mother b/c she spoke perfect english. I had no problem whatsoever understanding her. If I didn't know her I couldn't have guessed that english wasn't her first language. All of the Romanians I have talked to know at least enough english to hold a conversation.

When my husband and I met he could not speak more than 4 phrases in English, I could not speak Arabic and we shared a language of weak French! It was interested and for a while I felt like all we could say was "I love you, I miss you". But obviously we felt a connection the first time we saw each other because even though we had a hard time communicating verbally the time we spent together was worth every second. I feel like we've developed our own language now. When he came to the US his English had obviously improved since it was over a year later, he also completed his interview all in English with no problems. We practiced but he didn't really need my help. My family still has a bit of a hard time having a long conversation with him and I know it was really tough when he first came, but they always tell me how much he is improving. I have to remember now not to talk for him and that he can understand what is happening in a conversation, when watching a movie or TV and things like that. Sure I still have to explain stuff but he's getting really good. I on the other hand suck at Arabic - his sisters always try to talk to me and they are so sweet, talking slow and repeating and rephrasing things. I can understand them but I just can never seem to find the words to answer. I can't wait until the day we can have a conversation! So I think he is much more the linguist than me!
