Sujeet speaks very fluent English and has no troubles. But I can relate to how you are feeling, when I try to talk to Sujeet's family in India. If it's to his sisters I'm fine because they talk slower and they speak english pretty clearly. When I have talked to my father-in-law, his accent is very strong and I don't know enough hindi to speak to him in that and I panic. :innocent: I hate saying "what?" over and over because I don't want him to feel bad. I am the one who has to learn more of a new language to be able to speak to my in laws and I find it very nerve wracking if I speak to them. I applaud everyone who is fluent in more than one language.

Haha, I swear my future MIL does not speak Portuguese, let alone English. I can barely communicate with her in her weird country Portuguese. My boyfriend and his siblings tell me that even they can't understand her. :)

I feel your pain on that one.

:) Yeah. I know the jokes about MILs and all :P , which is fine, but it's a very tough situation for me. It will be nice to finally be able to talk face to face one day because I think hand gestures help a lot when trying to say things. And I'd feel more confident trying to say the Hindi words I know in person than over the phone. My MIL knows the least amount of English in their family so it's difficult for her seeing others talking to me on the phone while she cannot really.

My fiance is Russian and she does very well with English and I can even hear an English accent. Very sexy to listen to her speak English with an English accent but still have the Russian influence.

This is the one of the many things I am nervous about for her but the more I think about it the more I realize it will be fine and I hope she is comfortable enough with my family to use her English and not worry. As for the rest of the world I will try to re-assure her that we are a nation of immagrants and those who do not remember that are very short sighted and they are not worth her time or thoughts.

Good luck.

I'm the foreign one, i taught myself how to speak english when i was a teenager, now i have a BA in english teaching, and of course thats the main language we speak when we communicate, my guy knows lots of spanish, so, we make good use of that too. But, his first language is french, and i did take some french in school, so, this is my challenge now, to study and get better at french so that i can communicate with his family, and hes improving his spanish to do the same with mine. Practice makes perfect.

My wife's Egnlish is quite good, but she gets nervous sometimes especially on the phone and when meeting new people. So she's taking an ESL course at our local community college to boost her confidence. She's taking the second highest course. :)

I would be taking Arabic but I can't find any community college near me that teaches it. :(

:luv: Just curious~ Sometimes I feel shy and embarrassed when I talk to his families. I am afraid that I cant think out the right word to express my thinking or suddenly I cant understand what they talk about and cant do the right reaction. It's really my big problem.

I have no problem at all when I talk to my future husband.

Especially there are some topics about the culture issue, I cant handle it at all....All I can do is SMILE~~

Somebody have the same experience?

I do not envy you. If I didn't have my husband in Egypt I would have been as good as dead because I could not speak the language. Even the little Arabic that I know did me no good since it's the formal version and not any specific dialect. Your English (I'm assuming you're talking about your own English) seems pretty good to me so I think you'll be just fine.

My husband speaks fluent (proper/british) English... I don't understand him sometimes but I attribute that to him speaking my language better than me :P

when i was talking to my fiances mum (puerto rican) for the first time on the phone she said i speak like an american girl. and she told me that she dun hear no german accent.

ut when i met his lil brother (13 yrs) old he was making fun about my "accent". he kept telling me i pronounce some words very very funny ( :diablo: im trying my best...) but when i left to go back to germany he said he dun hear my accent no more and hopefully when i come back to the states i will have it again... (well thx a lot  )
