I am traveling back to the Philippines in May and returning back to USA on June 16.

My passport expires on Dec 6th and I don't have time to renew before I leave.

Will I be able to fly back out of the Philippines in June 16 and re-enter the US with less than 6 months left on my passport?

I am currently a legal permanent resident of the US.

It doesnt matter, all you need to re-enter the US is your Green Card. It would only matter that your passport was less than 6 months old if you were going to get a visa stamped in it, but that is not the case.

Yes, you would be able to fly out of the Philippines to the States.

Renewing my passport in the Philippines was my plan, it was one of the things I wanted to do while I'm over there. BUT, I just learned that it takes a long time to even set an appointment. I tried to make an appointment with the DFA Passport Appointment System, but the next available date was June 2. In addition to this, you'll need about 2 weeks or so for expedited service to receive the passport. This does not give me enough time and I might get stuck there. After doing some research, as long as your passport is valid, you are good for travel overseas.

On a similar note, my fiancee will be arriving in the US around Jan 2012, and her passport expires Jan 2014.

1) Can she renew it before she leaves for the US, since it has so much time left on it?

2) Can she get it renewed while she is in the US?

3) If it expires, and we try to travel back to the PI (say Jul 2012), will they grant her entry and allow her to renew it?

Wait until you are married and in the US before renewing the passport. It can be renewed at the nearest Filipino consulate. Some consulates also have reach-out programs to bring their services a little closer to your area. You will need to do a report of marriage, and get the passport amended or renewed before she returns to the Philippines.

I asked this same question to the Philippines consulate in Las Angelas and I got this response.

"Per ICAO regulations, passports must be valid for at least 6 month from the time of travel. In your case, yes, you might encounter some problems since your passport will be valid for less than 6 months from the time of your return travel to the U.S. It is advisable that you have your passport renewed or extended for another two years."

I called and asked "Even if I hold a green card and I am a legal permanent resident" but he said technically I am still a filipino citizen so there "could" be issues since its less than 6 months left.

I could apply for an extension but this isn't an "emergency" just an inconvenience.

Filipino bureaucrats give new meaning to ####### retentive. I doubt you will encounter a problem if the passport is still valid for the entire term of your trip.

On this topic, how soon after marriage here in the US can we go back to the Philippines to visit? Meaning, what step in the process do we need to reach, and how long does it take (assuming we do our part of each step as soon as reasonably possible)?

Once you file to Adjust Status, you can apply for advance parole, and that is generally recommended for travel you could not put off otherwise. However, events happen fairly quickly, so you may want to stick around until your wife gets her two year green card, which was about five months for us after we applied.

I have finally decided to go to the Philippine Consulate in LA to extend and renew my passport. According to the Consulate, you can do both at the same time and get your passport validity extension the same day. Passport renewal takes 6 to 8 weeks so I will be receiving it around the time I get back.
