People suck. Book burners suck less than murderers though. Perhaps Sandi would like to see a return of Taliban control in Afghanistan so she can live in an Islsmic paradise.

That's a pretty stupid statement.

And yet it precisely states the actions of the respective extremists in the OP. Why is it so difficult to admit:

A) Going on a killing rampage over a book burning is an extreme over reaction not indicative of right thinking minds?

B) There are persons in the world for whom Islam is practiced in a very political, very extreme manner? Dare I say it, even a very backwards, 1000 - 2000 years ago manner?

And why can't admitting the above reflect poorly only on Muslims who do so? There are good, peaceful, living in the modern era Muslims but none of them are the topic of this OP. The murderous mob no more reflects on the average Muslim than it does on me.

letting the threat of a terrorist act dictate your actions is what terrorism is all about.

You know, that statement really made me pause and think. I personalized the question and ask if I would have done the same as he did. And I definitely answer that I would not. If only for the reason of knowing what would happen. So, in a way, I guess I let the terrorists dictate what I would do. It's a difficult situation.

I know the pastor had the right to do what he did; but knowing what would probably happen; I question if it was wise for him to do it. Just because we have the right to do something doesn't mean we should. What was he thinking? What was he hoping to accomplish? Did he just want to show that Muslims were uncivilized inhuman barbaric animals? And I still haven't seen the answer to MC's question: how does an avowed christian knowingly and deliberately endanger the lives of others just to make a point that is already well known? He knew what would happen and he did it anyways. Why?

You also notice the cracker head Illinois Nazi is not doing that in retribution for something that happened on the other side of the planet.

I hate Illinois Nazis.

Surely you can see that the statement, "Our extremists do X, while their extremists do Y" is meant to make a statement about us vs. them (who us and them are exactly I am still unclear on), not just a statement about the extremists. We must be doing something right to produce reasonable extremists whereas they are doing something wrong to produce unreasonable extremists.

I suppose the analogy could be made with mice. There are brown mice and white mice. One you fear and try to keep out of your home, and the other makes cute pets or lab animals. Now, if you are an elephant who gets frightened at the sight of a mouse, do you take the time to notice the color of the creature that frightens you, or do you immediately go into a panic when something scurries across the floor?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

It states precisely jack. It states precisely that the author is a bigot. You want a conversation? Use less loaded language

Less loaded than say, murdering people half way around the world, people not responsible for burning the Quaran? And reading the drivel that defends such actions?

No, loaded language from people commentating on this incident and others like it.

If you want an honest dialogue about this, stop defending inflammatory rubbish and stop getting into bed with the people who propagate it.

I don't know if there is a kind way to describe a murderous mob, out rampaging and killing people not responsible for the action leading up to formation of said murderous mob. Since the offending action was the burning of a book, any description of said murderous mob deserves to be unkind.

That said, burning two Bibles, as opposed to going on a murderous rampage could possibly be viewed as a reasonable response. One worthy of being equated to the original act of burning a Quaran. Going on a murderous rampage half way around the world, killing people in no way involved has to reflect poorly on those who do such things.

My confusion also.

It's stultifyingly obvious that the Afghani murderers and beheaders themselves are unprincipled radicals worthy of scorn.

What is actually worth discussing is the relative culpability of a bigoted pastor whose unambiguous intent was to incite violence and inflame East/West animosity. The Qu'ran has been burned by extremists before, but Jones sought publicity and outrage for his actions, and after witnessing consequently violent protests last September, claimed to have "accomplished [his] goal".

I wonder how many of those nutters over there would start whacking peeps if I posted on my facebook page that I had just burnt a Quran.
