Jordan. He came here to get his degree and for me to finish mine.

Where would you go if you could retire outside the US?

I hear a lot of good things about Costa Rica. Of course, I haven't actually researched my options. Way too early to retire. I have a sneaking suspicion my wife will want to retire in India if we go out of country.

Yeah, all places are more or less what you can make of them and how far your funds will go. I'm retiring when I go. It's not too early for you! If you had to go to India, where would you pick? All of the places I really like (from purely pictures) there have... issues.. like flooding lol.

An electrician buddy of mine purchased a house on the beach in Costa Rica for less than sixty g's. He has a little over two acre's with the ocean on one side, and a creek bordering another side of the property. Banana's, monkey's...the whole shabang.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

 yes it is, are you kidding me? i don't have nearly enough to retire yet :P

If the decision were made to retire in India, then that decision would b based on where people we know are. Unlike in the U.S., you really do need to have contacts there to make it.

Sounds awesome!

I don't know. Costa Rica sounds good

CR does sound awesome :)

Supposedly that is how Jordan works too unless you come with enough money. He's got the former though and we're OK for the latter I guess. We plan to get set up before we go.

I guess it depends on the version of retirement everyone has in mind. For me, that involves growing my own food so I don't really need to worry about that factor as much. I already got my skills and supply and we have the land. He did quite a bit of agriculture over there in his spare time off teaching and used it to feed both his extended family, parents, and donate to charity. So, we kind of have that covered. What we don't have covered is a house and another plot of land for the house and a nice olive grove. He wants to buy a piece of his sister's property for that then propegate the olives through root cuttings. The plan is there and it is basically the same plan the rest of them have LOL. He'll still be working though. He likes work, why ever I do not know though. He enjoys teaching at the University. Meh.

A lot of gringos are retiring (or, simply moving) to Ecuador, especially the beautiful city of Cuenca, si man.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

meh...there's no mention of Alaska on that piece.

That doesn't sound like you... Did you forget about "evil imperialistic Russia"? Mr. Putin probably wants Alaska back also

(kidding of course)

Frankly, if I were in my mid 60s today I don't think I'd even consider retiring in the United States.

My fiance said one that he wanted to retire either in Florida or somewhere in Russia (which is exactly the same climate, you know  ).

That's why I've always considered Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands the best countries to live in :)
