Hello VJers!

When the background check is performed at VSC (or CSC depending on your center):

1. Does the background check include a credit check?

2. What exactly are they on a hunt for?

3. Also, they check both my Fiance's background (beneficiary) and mine, correct?

4. Does owing money, on either of our parts, affect the approval of the petition and/or approval of the actual visa?

Sorry if these questions have been asked before but I could not find them!

6.27.2014 Package Delivered to Chicago Lockbox (Day 02)

7.2.2014 Text Messages/Emails Received (Day 07)

7.7.2014 NOA1 Recv'd w/ June 30th Priority Date (Day 12)

7.12.2014 Recv'd Biometrics Appt Letter for 7.25.2014 (17)

7.14.2014 Early Biometrics Walk-In (Bronx ASC- gave us hard time and made us wait an hour and a half just to receive a number but we got it done) (Day 19)

7.29.2014 Status changed to "Testing and Interview" (no text or email notification) (Day 34)

8.28.2014 Received Text/Email "Card/Document Production" (Day 64 (Day 59 from Priority Date))

9.5.2014 Received Text/Email that EAD card has been mailed (Day 72 (Day 67 from PD))

9.8.2014 EAD Card received!! (Day 75 (Day 70 from PD))

9.12.2014 Applied for SSN (Day 79 (Day 74 from PD))

9.18.2014 Received SSN (Day 85 (Day 80 from PD))

10.08.2014 Received Interview Date for Nov 14th!! (Day 105 (Day 100 from PD))

11.14.2014 Interview Date!!! (Day 142 (Day 137 from PD))

I don't know if they do a credit check (I would be interested in knowing that). But I do know they put your FI's name through all the international databases, I guess to see if they are wanted internationally or have any crimes against them. I don't know how far in depth they can search or to what in-country access they have to criminal files etc.

I DO know that false positives can occur. When my fiance's mother applied for her US tourist visa some years ago, a woman with the same name as my future mother-in-law turned up as having stolen cars in the US, and so they assumed MIL was the same person and denied her... ! Only later did they figure things out. Isn't that scary though that they could find false positives?

If anyone has more info on the checks I would love to know!

October 12, 2010: NOA1 e-mail received, routed to VSC

October 16, 2010: NOA1 hard copy received (dated October 7, 2010)

April 18, 2011: RFE e-mail

April 20, 2011: RFE hardcopy received

April 20, 2011: RFE response sent to VSC

May 2, 2011: E-mail confirming VSC has received RFE response

July 27, 2011: NOA2 e-mail received (9 months, 2 weeks, and 6 days (292 days) after NOA1

July 30, 2011: NOA2 hard copy

August 4, 2011: NVC received case

August 8, 2011: NVC forwarded case to US Consulate in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

August 8, 2011: Consulate received case

August 25, 2011: Consulate mailed packet 3

September 3, 2011: Received Packet 3 in US

September 20, 2011: Interview! Not enough information in the system to make a decision

September 26, 2011: K1 visa approved and received via DHL

October 20, 2011: POE at Phoenix, Arizona

October 26, 2011: Married

11-7-2011 - AOS package sent to lockbox in Chicago, IL

11-9-2011 - AOS package delivered and signed for

11-15-2011 - NOA1 e-mails received (NOA1 date November 10), routed to NBC

11-16-2011 - Check Cashed

11-21-2011 - Hard Copies & Biometrics Appointment Letter Received

11-29-2011 - Biometrics done via walk-in! (Originally scheduled for 12/14/11)

12-2-2011 - Case transferred to CSC

1-17-2012 - EAD/AP Card Production Ordered

1-25-2012 - EAD/AP card received in mail

3-7-2012 - RFE issued

3-19-2012 - RFE response received by CSC

4-4-2012 - Green Card Production!

4-10-12 - GC received in mail

January 3, 2014: ROC

I am unsure of a actual credit check but I do know as a fact that they pull the US Citizens records from the IRS and will know about any tax liens etc. or monies owed. If this is the case, be prepared because it's likely the inquiries will come up and prove problematic if they beleive you don't pay your taxes. Also, a comprehensive background check, similar to a credit check is pulled.

I continued my research and it does not appear they perform a credit check...I asked because a couple of people had told me that they do one and to make sure everything was clean beforehand.

If anyone knows of a fiance visa case where they did, just let me know, but it seems like there is no issue there!
