Hi...Good day.. To all Filipina that married an american help me please...I married to an american and we will file my Adjustment of Status. I am very confused. In the Philippines, if a woman gets married her name will be change like this: Firstname Fathers lastname husband's last name. What will be my middle name then since i am living her in the US? Should i keep my middle name as my middle name or i will use my Father's last name as my middle name? I know in the US if you will get married you will keep your second name or middle name but things are different in the Philippines the middle name change into Father's last name if a woman gets married so her maiden name will be her middle name when she was single. Im afraid it will make trouble of me in the future if i will go to the Philippines. Filipinas out there please help me...Thank you so much.

Hi there! I decided to keep my dad's last name as my middle name, however, when I had my Biometrics, the woman there told me to use my middle name when I was single because it's different here in the US. They also said that if I really want to use my dad's, then I have to go to court or I should just wait for my AOS interview so I can explain to the IO the situation.

But when the girl inside typed my name on the computer, she just looked at my biometrics appointment letter, not the form I filled out (it's the form where the woman erased my dad's last name as my middle nameand changed it to my mom's). So on their file, my middle name is still my dad's. So, it depends. If you want it the Filipino way, then do it. Just be prepared cuz it might be an issue when you have your biometrics.

We just went through this issue, and it really depends on what state you live in. In our state (Georgia), the bride can select the name she wants and it is documented on the Marriage License. This has the same effect as a court order. My wife used the filipino custom and changed her middle name to her dads name, and then my name as her married surname. Everything was great, the social security card came with the correct name; the EAD came with the correct name, and her military ID had the correct name. However, during the AOS interview, the interviewer changed her middle name back to the one on her birth certificate. We didn't know this until the green card arrived with the wrong middle name. So now we had a green card that didn't match any of her other ID cards.

We immediately filed a form I-90 for a replacement green card and submitted no fee as we felt it was a USCIS error. USCIS accepted it and we just got her new green card in the mail yesterday with her correct name. The replacement green card took more than three months.

Hello...same here with us.. I also decided to follow how it's done in the Philippines..as for me, it was alil difficult because i got 2 first names but everything went well with just explaining alil..we got married in Missouri and whenever we applied for our marriage license, the clerk ask us what name will I use as my married name and it was ok. we didn't have any problem with SSN,State ID, EAD and Greencard even if we filed for those here in California(we live in CA). As far as I remember, during our AOS, I used my married name in all the forms. When we had our AOS interview, the IO asked me again if what name do I want to use on my greencard. I told her I want to use the same married name(using my father's surname as middle name and husband's last name as my surname). Everything went well. I got my greencard with the same name as all of my ID cards..God bless!!.:-)

That actually seems to be a common practice among Americans too, to change their middle name to their old maiden name.

It all depends on the state and what names you can choose automatically at marriage and which you have to change formally. Choose the name you want and then just make sure you make it legal :-)
