Getting Police Certificates in Ontario

Just a little insider info...the RCMP in Ontario will no longer be providing police certificates to the public for any reason. It is possible you may find a detachment still doing them, but for those of you who will be needing one soon, I suggest just going straight to the OPP or municipality police.

Hope this helps anyone needing a police certificate soon.

I had to go through the OPP to get mine done, and then send it off the the RCMP that was the only way they did it in Sault Ste. Marie and that was 3yrs ago now.

I can confirm this as well. Husband went to get his last week and ended up at OPP. He has to wait a week or two to get it back too because they said they "only do them in batches" and to check back in a week or two. Anyone else get that line? Was slightly frustrated but trying to take it all in stride.

It all depends on the detachment how they handle record checks/police certificates. Some detachments get so many police certificate requests that it's just more feasible for them to do them one day a week instead of all the time, everyday. That's how I did it at the first detachment I worked at (as you can tell, I work for an RCMP detachment in Ontario).

I forgot to mention that fingerprints are a different story...we will still do them if required, just not the police certificate.

I got that too when I had mine done in 2009. They told me it would take "a week or two" and said someone would call me. Two weeks later no call! So I went down there and they had it sitting around. I guess they decided calling wasn't important...

I just called the # I had to get a RCMP clearance, apparently this office is contracted by the RCMP and are still up and running. So, I can go in for $60 and have the police clearance within 1 day or for $45.00 and a 3-6 week wait go to the local police department. So I would suggest that everyone check with thier RCMP detachment to see if they direct you to a contracted source.

Thanks for that! I had intended to go to the RCMP instead thinking it would be faster, but I'll use the local branch instead!

Was it the Corps of Commissionaires? They exist in many towns and do several law-related services like police certificates, fingerprinting and oaths, etc.
