It might do, but it's wrong.

First, Eugenics refers to the selective breeding of entire populations, not individuals.

Second, the term as coined refers specifically to humans and the c19-c20 scientific/political movements that arose from it specifically related to people, not horses or any other aninal.

Intelligence is poorly correlated with winning at life. Pick another trait :P

What "winning at life" actually means is debatable but by and large, intelligence does enable one to reach his goals or dreams.

I consider intelligence just one trait that is admirable.... but certainly not the primary one.

Language evolves. There are plenty of examples that I found (and I limited my search to the .edu domain) of people using the word for non-human populations.

A more proper term concerning animals might be -Selective breeding.

I don't know about 'proper' but that certainly is more common. I have, however, found quite a few instances in the .edu domain of the term eugenics being applied to non-human populations. While that use is probably not consistent with how the word was first coined (I don't question fishdude's expertise when it comes to the English language), it is simply not debatable that many use it that way today.

If that is true, why do we need public education? Teaching all the dimwits and poorly motivated would seem futile, wouldn't it? After all, success is not determined by intellectual ability, right?

That's right, success is not determined by intellectual ability in most cases. Surely there are particular cases when success is determined precisely by the intellectual ability of individual (Gates and Jobs come to mind), but that is not the norm.

Why do we need public education? Well, if those dimwits were not educated in addition to being dimwits (how many dimwits are there anyway?), the world would be a scary place to live.

Let's not confuse the level of education with intellectual ability - the two are not the same. :)

High IQs are better correlated with depression than success. I would agree that normal or slightly elevated intelligence helps to succeed (unlike being nearly retarded). But it is also not so good to have a high IQ. B-)

Along the lines of this thread...

"All they have to do is ban abortion if you live in a nice neighborhood and facilitate it if you live in the hood... "

...winning in life would be to be able to live in a nice neighborhood. It does not so much come from genetics, but from the family one is born into and from opportunities one had growing up. I guess it still requires one to not be a violent idiot... but anything above that level may very well be sufficient.

I respect hard workers perhaps the most.

It's one reason why I am intellectually against illegals .... but personally I like'em.

There is no evidence for "hard working" trait to be inheritable, right?

So let's leave eugenics (or selective breeding) out of equation for producing successful adults who pay social security taxes

Obviously your experience with man and animal is limited.

"Drive" is very much passed on, both in genetics and by socializing.
