So my case was completed February 1st 2011. As per the automated phone system at the NVC, I was to wait 8 weeks and then contact them if I had not yet received further instructions. I did contact them today and the lady wasn't very helpful. She just stated what the cut-off date and didn't seem to want to answer my questions.

I guess I'm a little confused as to what to expect in terms of waiting. I mean, will it be a month or 24 months before I get an interview date? I would like to hear back from fellow Canadians who are in the Family Based Categories and have gone through the process. My priority date is September 2007. Case Completed February 1st 2011. April's Visa Bulletin cut-off date retrogressed to May 2004. It would be interesting to know what priority dates at the US Consulate in Montreal are being processed.

So your priority date is Sept 2007?

NVC starts processing cases close to the priority date but Visa Bulletin priority date in F1 never advanced beyond Feb 2006...and Sept 2007 is not even close especially now with retrogression...normally NVC is not able to forward your docs and let you schedule your interview if your priority date is not before the cut-off. In your case it is not even close, so I am not sure why they even started processing your case. Some of the docs that they requite have a lifetime of up to 6 months so by the time they are ready to interview you in MTL you will have to get at least new police reports/criminal checks. And as for interviewing in MTL, after NVC completes processing of the case, it takes about 4 months to get an interview. People in the Canadian CR-1 thread keep track of that, check it out.

PS. No one really knows how fast the priority dates for F1 in Visa Bulletin will advance, but the fact that they retrogressed them so much means that they expect a really heavy demand...my guess is that people who were subjects to section 245(i) became citizens and upgraded their petitions for their children from F2B to F1 and now their priority dates became current...but who knows...

That's exactly what my parents had done for me. Thanks for the info :) I'll call the NVC again tomorrow and hopefully speak with someone who can shed a little light as to why they'd complete my case only to have me go through all of that again in the future since most of my docs will expire. I'm also not too comfortable with them having my birth certificate. Cheers!

Hi Jules:

You´re not alone, my case is identical to yours. My PD is May 2007… and yes my case has also been completed at NVC last January 6 2011.

If you want to know why our cases started moving last year, here is why:

NVC starts processing cases close to PD becoming current, when they forecast that your PD is around 1 year to 9 months away from becoming current. Last year in the Visa Bulletin for Oct-2010, category F1 advanced to 15FEB06 and considering at the PACE THEY WERE MOVING FORWARD, our PD´s were within 1 year of becoming current. So you see , they were just doing what they always do, activating cases that were going to be current by May or June this year (assuming they kept moving forward at the same pace). And then Retrogression hit us … and here we are in limbo again.

Good luck in your journey!
