If you were 19 marrying a 17 year old, I wouldn't have a big problem with that. But 27 with a 17 year old? You bet your ####### I have a problem with that. What about at age 25, woud you have married a 15 year old? Or at age 23, would you have married a 13 year old?

27 and 17 -- what's the big deal? Both are young and have similar interests.

Now 47 and 17.... that would be a different story.

why? there are a few here with similar age spreads or 20, 30+ yrs

as long as both parties are of legal age, any negative comments regarding that age difference are just the poster's prejudice shining thru.

So where do you start drawing the line? Is 12 years too much? 15? 17.264?

I say there are WAY too many factors for any of us to make a determination about people's maturity on a forum. Two 17 year-olds can be completely different maturity levels, so to make generalizations between what number of years ias acceptable and what isn't a strong argument.

The only facts are, that having sex with a minor is illegal if you are over 24 months older than them (that's the law here in Indiana at least). Do we know anyone had sex with anyone? No. Does anything else really matter when it comes to the law? Also no. Do we have enough information to make any judgements? I really don't think so.

So if your 17 year old daughter, sister, cousin whatever came and told you she was in love witha 27 year old man in a foreign country...was marrying him, and moving...you'd be totally ok with that?

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

Use your own judgement when it comes to your own daughter, by all means. You actually know her, or I hope you do.

But these anonymous posters on VJ... you don't know them. You don't know their partners. If it's legal, keep your opinions to yourself. JMHO.

That's a moral question, and morality is definied by each person seperately.

Some people feel like I'm immoral for not going to church every Sunday. Some people think I'm one of the most moral people they've ever met is.

The only way you can actually judge this without knowing the character of these people and being closely involved with them is by the law. And so the question should be, "If your 17 year old _____ was having SEX with a 27 year old, would you be okay with it?" And the only answer we can give relating to any of the cases stated above is "No." because it's illegal. And that's the only thing we can for sure state.

I was 22 when I married my husband - really not that much older than the foreign fiancee being talked about here, and under the "25 years old" point some have suggested is when an age difference becomes less significant. My husband is 13 years older than me. Does that make him a sick pervert?

(REALLY FREAKING BIG HINT: The answer to that is "No".)

Just because something doesn't fit into your predefined idea of "the perfect relationship" does not mean it's not real or true.

As for the legalities, we don't know who's been doing what with who, and to make baseless comments about the sex life of someone who is not even a long-time poster is unfair and a really poor reflection on this site and the people on it. We might not always agree on VJ, but I thought we were at least reasonably fair. I guess I was wrong. <shrug>

It's difficult to relate to someone who is 30 younger than you.

17: just graduated from high school, not yet attended a university or college,

not sure what they want to do yet, want to explore and try different things,

travel around the world, etc etc

47: none of the above
